Looking for more Center of the Universe maps
« on: July 12, 2010, 12:17:42 pm »
Pretty simple request.  I'm mainly looking for maps that are 80+ in spokes that are the center of the map, where everything has to go through it to get to the other side.  I've played (#1597656251, spokes, 80 planets), which was a ton of fun with a friend, and we dominated it.  I'm hoping that later this month I can get him to come up and play another game, on an 8.0 diff instead of 7.3.  If anyone has seen a map that fits this, please let me know.  Thanks.

I know this request was from before the CoN stuff entered beta, but I think you would like the new X-shaped map, though I'm not sure what percentage of the seeds will give you a starting position on the central planet, if that's what you mean.

Yea.  I checked them out today.  the X maps look really fun.  Kind of wish the circle ones allowed you to start in the center and work your way out, but i think i understand how the game is to be played being on the outside working in.  I went through a couple hundred seeds on X-type map, and they all start on one side or another of the big X in the middle.  It is fine by me, this still looks like a ton of fun to play.  If you look at the map seed that i posted originally, the one that was x14, was in the center.  I was hoping to find another map like that, where the odds were definitely against you, and everything had to come through you.  Over the course of a few weeks, I haven't found a new map like that yet.  It is definitely a gem of a map though.

I'd also like the c-circle type to have some center starts, and x-type as well.  Honestly from the generation-pattern code where I did that work I had really no control over where it puts the homeworlds (which is good in that I didn't have to worry about it and couldn't mess it up).  I think I'll look into punching a few holes in the homeworld-placement code and see if it can be done unobtrusively.

That would be wicked if you could.  The style I tend to play with a friend of mine is that I hold a central location, and we work on clearly a "arm" as well call them in spoke.  We kill 2-3 of them, clean them out, colonize, and move to the next connection.  It makes the game a bit more challenging then normal, but we have alot of fun seeing how high we get the AI progress, and the CPAs.  That or we are masochists. :)

Ok, for 3.176:

* X-shaped and Concentric-Circle maps now have a roughly 1/3rd chance of putting the eligible starting planets in the center, instead of always on the outer parts.

Turned out that it was really easy with the way Chris had it set up.  It had just been taking the last-generated-planet as the starting point for human homeworld assignment (AI homeworlds are computed much later), so I just put a random chance of a branch that used the first-generated-planet instead, and done :)

Oh and for the masochists I suggest the new Hybrid Hives AI Plot ;)  Of course, it's a fairly different kind of pain.

hehe.  Thanks man.  That is wicked.  I do plan on trying the hive out when we get a game going later today.  The avenger was alot of fun as well.  You guys really do a great job with your game.  I'm so glad I found it.

We're glad you found it too :)

I rather doubt 3.176 (with the central starts) will be out today, but I'm sure you can find a suitable other start from which to get mauled ;)

That was a fun seed to play. I had started a game there in the After Action Report section of the forums but haven't had time to get back to it. http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,5020.0.html

Some seeds do start on the interior planets.

In either case the map plays almost like Snake type systems played from the middle (there's only two planets neighboring your territory 90% of the time).
