Electric Turrets
« on: February 15, 2010, 12:03:10 am »
Heyo,

Playing my first 7/7 match, having a good time; but I'm suffering ridiculous losses with my special units [raptor and planes].

Whenever I assault an enemy planet, they often have electric turrets.  I send in my normal fleet (fighters, bombers, cruisers) and then I send in my secondary fleet of planes and raptors, only to see all my planes die in literally 2 seconds as an electric turret goes off, annihilating 400+ units.

So, how can I get rid of electric turrets without losing a thousand units a pop/am I using planes & raptors correctly?

I feel your pain on this one; space planes are one of my favorite bonus units, and lightning turrets have lost me more fleets of them than anything except lightning shuttles...

Space Planes are notable for having the highest attack power but lowest health of almost any unit in the game.  This makes them very, very effective if they get the first strike, but cripplingly vulnerable to area-of-effect attacks like lightning turrets.  The only foolproof way to get space planes past lightning turrets is to simply kill the turret with a hardier unit before sending in the space planes.  However, a decent alternative strategy with Space Planes (and a good strategy with cloaked units overall) is to send them in powered down (low power mode button in the lower left).  While powered down, they will not open fire on enemy units and therefore will no lose their cloak.  If you are clever and use a scout or single space plane to test for tachyon emitters, you can get a swarm of space planes literally on top of their target before decloaking them.

Extremely few things survive a point blank volley from a swarm of space planes.  :)

EDIT: Against single lightning turrets, you can also send in a single space plane as a sacrificial lamb to draw the turrets fire, then hope you can kill it before it has time to recharge.  In any case, ALWAYS manually target lightning turrets so that the space planes kill them first.

lightning missles. 2 or 4 of those bad boys over the initial warpin wormhole can take those turrets out quickly. and make for a safe spot to warp into and then begin taking out the other turrets via long range.

Or if you really want to rake up the AIP EMP them long enough to take them out.

Raider starships also do a good job. sending those in to take out the lighting turrets then send in your main fleet to take out the rest.

Also I beleive somone else has sugested using force fields to protect your fleet.

your main fleets job should be destroying the lightning turrets first thing - fighters/bombers/frigates arrive on scene, primary lightning turrets. Raptors and planes mop up.

Also, starships are a good choice; Fleet starships can deal with them rather easily, if a tad slowly.

However, a decent alternative strategy with Space Planes (and a good strategy with cloaked units overall) is to send them in powered down (low power mode button in the lower left).  While powered down, they will not open fire on enemy units and therefore will no lose their cloak

that may not work while the "lightning turrets fire at cloacked ships" problem is still up ( ??? don't know if it's still up or not ??? )

well, the "take the lightning turrets out first with your fighters, bombers, frigates and other ships" suggestion is propably the easiest thing to do and pretty much always working.

Anyways, good luck!

EDIT: the problem was already solved some time ago.
