Are Spider turrets and Sniper Turrets truly identical?
« on: November 12, 2009, 01:32:00 pm »
The text and stats indicate that these are identical but the numbers show some differences in effectiveness. Spider turrets are better at Fighters/Bombers than Sniper turrets. Is this just a typo or is there a difference in power that isn't making it into the hover text.

I never bothred to spend the knowledge of Spider Turrets, but I know that they cause engine damage.
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.

I don't bother with spider turrets most of the time, either. My sniper turrets usually kill off the targets while shooting so the engine damage and increased costs aren't worth it.

That was my thinking too. But if they do more damage (as the hover tip seems to imply) they might be worth looking at.

I agree. Even a little bit more damage, hp or faster reload time would be good.

Don't discount engine damage when there's a starship bearing down on your command station.

Don't starships have like 100k engine health? ;p

Yep, most of them. Dreads and Bombers have 3k though.

That page still says that have infinite engine health (update coming soon).

...and I would still prefer brute force and avoiding in-planet harassments and mayhem, unless I have teleport units.

I stole someone's idea of putting 30-40 sniper turrets on my home planet and boosting them with munitions boosters... So that's a pretty deadly force to any wave that breaks through my initial defenses.

I think it was mentioned somewhere earlier but maybe should go to suggestions:

Spider turrets would be much better if they would be capable of splitting shots between targets based on engine damage.

Currently even if you have 20 of these they all will shoot at one cruiser - even if they could disable at least few of them in one volley of engine damage.
They will chenge target after first salvo actually gets to the target and it's engines are disabled - but considering their rang it can take a while before shots hit.

This is an awesome idea! why didn't i think of this? Guess you can't overestimate their usefulness...

I agree with the idea of automatically switching between targets based on engine damage. This would allow them to be a lot more effective although; it might be a bit unbalance if a group of spider turrets could stop an entire attacking force in its tracks.

Then maybe there should be a % value that engine values can never go beneath - like say, 20% of the original engine power will always be existent, so that ships can NEVER be slowed down to a full-stop.

Just thinking loud ;)

If spiders could target smarter according to engine damage then they could do maybe a bit less of it and would be still very useful - assuming that for example 4-5 shots would disable normal ship engines not 2 as it is now.
