You play AVWW, what other games do you play?
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:33:31 am »
Although I already know a lot of our veterans' preferences, I wanted to ask this generally to anyone taking part in the beta to get some idea of the eclectic crew we're rolling with here... Also we just have a bunch of new folks... Also it helps me know who plays (and more importantly likes to play) AVWW. I am the marketing guy. :)

So, what games/kind of games do you play?

DoomRL, trying to also learn Dungeon Crawl but it's really hard.

There are many other games that I enjoy, yet those two free text-based roguelikes take up most of my gaming time.

Excluding Sports, and a few Sim and Racing games, I like to play games from all genres. My favorites lies in the Sandbox game types, which, procedurally generated or not, allow for a degree of freedom that makes me fell, well, free ;).

I also like games with innovatives gameplay features, and lots of multiplayer games, not many MMO's, but if it haves some multiplayer component (especially when it's Co-op, or the multiplayer offers a new kind of gameplay [see Crysis Power Struggle and C&C: Renegade multiplayer, which resembles a little of the strategy titles]), it may attract me too.

Actual games I play are:

Minecraft / Terraria (waiting on v1.1) / GTA IV / Borderlands / AVWW (Of course :D) / AI War / X² and X³ (privateer-like space sims) / League of Legends / Mount and Blade / X-Com TFTD

Man, I play all sorts of stuff, 4X, dungeon crawlers, Sports Management sims...

I think the game's I've been playing the most that aren't in Arcen's catalog are Dungeons Of Dreadmor, Football Manager 2011, and Minecraft. But, if you ask me again in a month, that may change.

Sims and strategy, which is what first led me to Arcen - AI War.

Currently I'm playing Sengoku, the new grand strategy title by Paradox.  I play a lot of their games.  But I'm a sucker for strategy in general and sci-fi strategy in particular, with Sins of a Solar Empire probably being my most-played game in the last few years.  I also love MMORPGs.

Are you playing vanilla Dungeon Crawl or Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup? In my experience, Stone Soup tends to offer a slightly more comprehensive experience/UI/etc.

If you're looking into various other roguelikes, you might want to give Dungeons of Dredmor a gander. It's on steam and pretty hilariously fun while still maintaining the tough-as-nails roguelike vibe.

DoomRL is great fun.

Personally, I've been all over the map. Really enjoying Sengoku from Paradox Interactive a whole lot. Can't wait for Crusader Kings 2. When I have had the time, I've been beating the crud out of zombies in Dead Island, too.

Right now, I have Eschalon: Book II running in the background. Also a fan of Din's Curse, which has some similar coordinates to AVWW (in terms of managing a settlement, rescuing NPCs, etc.)

Big fan of off-the-wall titles like Star Ruler, Frozen Synapse and the aforementioned Dungeons of Dredmor. Looking forward to the final release of Desktop Dungeons (the beta is amazing) and Legends of Grimrock looks to be up my alley too.

I'm a very ecclectic guy. I play lots of indie games (i love how you get in touch with the programmers and how they solve your personnal problem. Arcen did great with a bug of mine who took months to be fixed but they did. With a AAA title they just don't care). I' playing ai play ai wars but also games from puppy games, positech, exosyphen, introversion... I also play hearts of iron 3 and grand strategy games. All on the mac natively.
I also play aaa titles but that's on my 360.

My preferred genres are Strategy,RPG and Shmups, but I play all of them.

What have I played recently... Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Sword of the Stars, Terraria, Star Ruler, Jamestown, Really Big Sky, Starfarer, Dungeons of Dredmor, Sengoku, Dead Island, Deus Ex HR, SPAZ, The Witcher 2, RIFT.... and that's not including console games.

Of course there is a difference between playing something and liking something, but i like most of the above.

Wow, loads of really top-quality stuff being mentioned in this thread!

I... have a pretty big backlog.

Mine is shamefully large.  I have little idea how many games are on the list, and I honestly don't want to know either.  I'd hate myself. :D

My favorite genre is turn-based strategy with a fairly limited scope. RTS games overwhelm me with their pace, wheras something like Europa Universalis overwhelms me with its scale. So Civ, Tower defense, adaptations of card games, things like that. I also love RPGs, but have a hard time getting myself geared up for one these days. Replaying older games (SNES through PS2 era) is also high on my priority list. I suppose that's relevant, because as somebody said in a preview, AVWW feels sort of like an alternate gaming future that could've happened if 3d never took off and developers all worked on evolving SNES-era games instead.

In terms of Indie games, I buy a lot of them, particularly ones that seem like they have  a lot of thought behind them and/or a developer that seems worth supporting. (This has both)

Some favorites are Braid, Recettear, Gratuitous Space Battles, Spectromancer, and Spacechem.

I also have a passion for surreal and atmospheric games that draw me into a different, almost dreamlike world. Myst and the Void are good examples. This seems like it might get partway there with some polish, which is part of the appeal.

This has the chance of being a long list, but I'll cut it down a bit.

The Sims 3 (even though it has some many bugs and problems it manages to pull me back time after time)
Terraria
Project Zomboid
Legend of Zelda
Pokemon
Dwarf Fortress
Mario (I'm more fond of the rpgs like Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi than the platformers)
Bioshock (I'm not usually a fps person but I picked it up recently and enjoyed it)
Elder Scrolls
Mass Effect
Dragon Age
Xenoblade Chronicles
GTA
A Valley Without Wind (kinda obvious :p)
Mario Kart
Super Smash Bros
The Longest Journey: Dreamfall

That's in no particular order too. (This is mostly the games I'm still going in and out of playing at the moment, or have played in the past and intend to come back to them)

So I'd say my type of games are ones that pull you in with storyline/characters (like Mass Effect, Xenoblade Chronicles) or that allow you to have a lot of creative input (Sims, Terraria) and also games that give you a lot of freedom (GTA, Elder Scrolls, Project Zomboid)

So:

1. Engrossing storyline, characters and atmosphere/setting.
2. Creative input (and lots of it)
3. Freedom (like sandbox)

If a game has even one or two of those filled I'm likely to enjoy it. (not always but there's a good chance)

My least favourite genre of game would probably be puzzle games. I'm yet to witness that addictive power of tetris. It pretty much flies in the face of 1,2 and 3 above.

Oh man, I forgot SPAZ and Frozen Synapse? That's awkward, so to compensate, let me add two more series to my favs:

Elder Scrolls (despite the sue Bethesda is doing to Mojang because of the latter creating an unrelated game called "Scrolls")
Fallout

I... have a pretty big backlog.

Same here... would make a big list, even if I only told the franchises.

.... oh yeah, and Dwarf Fortress too.
