Story behind the world?
« on: November 29, 2011, 08:47:38 am »
I am not sure where you are trying to go with the story, but I've started to make my own thoughts around it. Thought I'd share.

I have personally always wondered if there may exist beings that can move as freely in Time as we can move in Space, while being as restricted to movement in Space as we are in Time. These crystals fit this perfectly.

These crystals seem to be willing to shelter and protect humans, but why? Is it a symbiosis?

The world has been ripped apart into time chunks. Monsters are rampaging, any human leaving the protection the Crystals can give will soon be overwhelmed by these monsters. Dead humans are reported to get unstuck in time, becoming vengeful ghosts.

Our hero, the Glyph bearer, now has the chance to explore the timewarped world, and save other humans that still survive, and bring them and their Crystal protector back to a village. If our hero dies, another villager will be selected to continue his task.

So venture forth, save the humans and try to remove the monster threat.

Keith has reams and reams of story that haven't been integrated into the game yet, and even I'm not aware of the details of all of it, honestly.  But in general, all magic flows from the Ilari, which are these larger noncorporeal beings that you can interact with through their various guardian stones (the crystals you refer to).  The crystals themselves are just objects, but they are conduits to the Ilari.

Similarly, the glyphs are given out to various people in the world from the Ilari, and when one person who was a glyphbearer dies, that glyph passes to someone else.  People without a glyph who stay out in the world, beyond the protection of a guardian stone or a neutral Ilari stone at worst, quickly go crazy.  Many of them turn into some sort of evil monster, some don't.

There are also Dark Ilari that are not benevolent at all, and they're responsible for most of what is going on with The Deep.  And there's some other faction of Ilari that I forget what they are called, but they are more wild and untamed rather than distinctly evil.

In terms of what actually happened to the world (what caused the breakup and reforming of reality), that's something that will get seeded into each world as a mystery to solve as you play through it.  And some of that will vary by world.

Wow this provides more questions than answers. I really like the mystery side to the game.

Just one thing that struck me as odd here... Not sure if I misunderstood or if you've changed your minds about it, but:
Similarly, the glyphs are given out to various people in the world from the Ilari, and when one person who was a glyphbearer dies, that glyph passes to someone else.
From issue 5226 in the mantis:

It's actually intentionally mysterious (the Ilari didn't give it to you, by the way), but some explanation of what is known or not known might be a good thing.

Humm... I thought the glyphs were from the Ilari, but it sounds like I was mistaken. :)

Either way, it'll be really interesting to see what you guys have thought up story-wise! And the fact that the story will be seeded into the world and thus different from world to world... can't wait to see that in action.
