Crafting feedback
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:10:26 pm »
Not going to open a defect for this, maybe somebody could explain.

So I have the facility to learn spells, and then I have the facility to actually make those spells.

I went to the spell maker facility after learning some spells, but it turns out that some of the spells I chose I cannot actually make yet. I feel like I wasted my choices. I almost restarted the game, but I thought "it's beta, who cares?" and decided to press onwards.

As I was...er..pressing onwards, I was trying to find my spell book so I could drag spells onto my ability bar. Where exactly is this spell book that tells me what I have and the path that I'm on? One of the motivators in the game for me so far is trying to find and make all kinds of spells, but am lost as to how to keep track of where I am in the process. And when I go back to town, I run into the same problem as before where I have to go back and forth between both buildings trying to figure out what I can do.

So my suggestion would be to combine both of these buildings with some interface tweaks that not only tell you what you can learn, but what you can actually build. If that's not possible, the area on the bottom that explains how much gems you have and what kind of spell you could make could also say, "you can make this spell!" Easy, unobtrusive.

I also have to say, so far I feel like I'm hoarding. Every once in a while I find something shiny, and I have the option of making scrolls or making spells. If I make spells, I get them forever, but as I understand it, if I make it a scroll, it's probably limited. I'm afraid of using my inventory on a limited item that I could have used to make a permanent item. For efficiency sake, I can't imagine spending something on a temporary item that I could have had forever.

How is everyone else managing their spells and crafting for these things? I feel like I need more help managing my inventory and planning, as if there is a whole other screen that I'm missing that would tell me all about what I have and where I'm going with it.

Scrolls and spells are made from different things.

Spells are made from gems, which are a lot rarer, and must be mined in caves to get more.

Scrolls, while they are one time use, are made from gem dust, which can be found randomly in buildings.

Does this help?

It answers the hoarding question. Still doesn't help with figuring out what I can do with what I have, what I am close to being able to build, what spells I currently own, that kind of thing. That information would be nice to have in the field; it would help me plan my travels. Right now I'm just picking up a bunch of stuff, but I want to know more about what I have, what my character can do, what my character can almost do (where I'm going with what I have), and so on. I understand that you might know because you've been playing a while, but I'm still looking for the spell book (I'm guessing the spell book is only available at the Guardian facility, and only if I can build the same spell twice?).

Things like a list of what spells you have unlocked the crafting recipes for and stuff like that have been discussed as future improvements.  The current crafting interface was completely overhauled just a couple days ago, so it's all still being sorted out.  I know exactly what you mean, though, and it's something I've wanted since I first started testing.  There just hasn't been time for it to all make it into the game yet.  I think it might be on Mantis to vote it up, or at least I'm pretty sure I saw something similar earlier.

Um the spellbooks just unlock spells, they don't store them. You have to craft spells to be able to put them onto you action bar to use them.  Is that what you were referring too?

I referred to them in my post, but no that's not the issue. Sounds like something that could change during the beta.

Oh, so you want a spell book that lists all of the recipes that you have unlocked. Right?

Currently, the best place to find out which spells you CAN make is at the spellgem workbench.

Also, please bear in mind that there are a lot of spells that we simply haven't added to the game yet. :-)
