Thanks, Teal. I've already cheered up quite a bit, honestly. I overreact to things when I'm first showing something new to a wider audience, and even though I brace myself for it, it happens every time. Somebody could go "I think the font needs tuning" and I'd probably flip out. But once that initial shock is off, then I'm fine.
Anyway, and Misery, you're right about the combat. It's something I can beat, incidentally, so it's not impossible. But it is very very hard, I'll grant you. Though I've only tested it on Normal, and you may be playing on Hard, where it may be impossible, I don't know. At any rate, I have lots of plans there, and they aren't so elaborate as to require major code or anything.
No, it was on Normal, actually, which was part of what baffled me a bit, since I had remembered you had said it was doable from your own testing, and that's why I was wondering if I was outright missing something.
To further elaborate, the main problems were two things: The constellation arrangements, and the enemy's tendancy to sit on them.
The half-ring and line ones arent too bad, it's the others that are the problem.
Like the bit in this picture:
Even if I can get some ships in there without them getting immediately annihilated by the outer turrets.... and that's difficult enough in a real-time game where I dont have super-exact control over each ship.... they cant enter that central circle. They WILL get blasted. And of course I cant attack the enemy flagship without entering it....
And this is without any other enemies around, which of course isnt the case normally. When they're sitting on a turret as they tend to, I cant attack them either, but they can get at my ships easily, if the turrets somehow miss them. And even if my ships DID get somehow in one of the rings, their circling motion would just get them killed within a few seconds.... but they so far do not last long enough for that.
This has been the case so far with all of the ring-types. That's pretty much what I meant in my rambling statement about it. It's also the bit where the strategy aspect falls apart for me.... it feels more like I'm trying to find some secret break in the wall that I must find in order to advance, like in Metroid or something, rather than having an RTS style battle.
Again, I could be missing something, if I am do feel free to enlighten me....
That screenshot taken very quickly from the current version's battle test mode. I dont have time at the moment to have a proper go at the main game, I'll get to that later in the night. Just thought I'd illustrate my point a bit.
