Title: Server interruptions over the next day or two.
Post by: x4000 on March 15, 2015, 09:24:30 AM
Hey guys, we are still hard at work on Stars Beyond Reach, and as the forumites know there have been a number of update posts there.  I'll be sure to do a bigger blog post sometime soon.

That said, this particular post is about some server stuff that we're working on.  The awesome Quinn is working on switching us over to a new host that should have vastly better performance than what we've been seeing lately on our current host.  And we'll be saving money, ironically, while having vastly better specs.  Go figure.

Anyway, repointing DNS servers will cause some of you to seemingly have the site down for a bit, even though it's not.  And there will be some brief points where literally the site is down due to being moved at those moments.  We'll keep it as brief as possible, but thanks for your patience.  Better performance awaits on the other side!

And then:

Two days of lost posts. ;)

Yeah, for sure.  Holy smokes what a mess in the end.  I'm just glad to be back on solid ground.  I'm glad we tried this as an experiment, because it could have been a really great move.  But in the end it turned out that hostgator was... very lacking.

Incidentally we would not have lost two days of posts if the forum database had not just mysteriously disappeared off their servers.  That's just one example of the wonderful sort of experience we had with them.  Quinn here has been a real hero working with them to try to get everything straightened out, but in the end they even were not backing up that database for some reason.  Facepalm.

Those guys did not seem to have it together at all.  Maybe great for smaller sites or sites with just a single type of thing on them (a wiki or whatever), but for a site with our amount of data, our amount of load, and our number of applications (three main ones), it was just a disaster.  Plus some hacker got in on the very first or second day.  Not a good start, I should have taken that as an omen...

I told you, my preposterous ego is missing!

Yuck :\

Hmm, I use Hostgator as well and if that nonsense is going on, well, makes me a bit skiddish....are you guys planning on changing from them?

Yup, we were switching to them when this happened. So we are now with Rackspace.

mk, thanks. I'll keep my eye on them for future hosting.

IIRC, my company hosts with Lunar Pages.  We've not had the best tech support from them and they seem very reluctant to solve problems, but they do get things done when we threaten to go somewhere else (we pay them something like $5-10,000 a month, which is passed on to our clients).

That is a pretty substantial difference between prices.

I originally hosted the arcen site with lunarpages before switching to rackspace.  I definitely prefer rackspace for our particular needs.

5000 to 10000?

And yeah. If we have continued problems with lunar pages, I'll recommend Rackspace

Your post has $5 to 10000, Draco. Not 5000 unlessI read it wrong.

(5 to 10) thousand, not 5 to (10 thousand). :p

I read it the same way as Aklyon at first, but then realized what you meant.  I think it may be a regional or country or whatever difference in how we write number ranges like that. No big thing. :)

Could be.  Which is why I rewrote it the second time, even if I did have to parse the original to explain what I'd meant.
I guess I was being too colloquial ("Five to Ten-Thousand" spoken aloud doesn't usually carry the same confusion).

I'm new, so sorry for posting in an old thread, but I really wanted to say this. Hostgater sucks! It's a good thing that you decided to switch. I haven't heard much about Rackspace, but I hear nothing but nightmares about Hostgater.

I have been hearing good things about 1&1 too, and they actually have actual game server specifications. If you run into trouble again in the future you can check them out.
