Title: "forever" login doesn't work
Post by: Pumpkin on April 25, 2016, 07:03:41 am
The site seems to have a very personal definition of "forever".

Since the host switch, I was required to log in every time I came to the forum, even if I select "forever" as a login duration (as I always do).

Not a big problem, just letting you know.

Is that still happening since last night?  More specifically, if you close your browser sometime today and then come back after 2ish hours, does it still do that?  We made some changes that might have fixed that.

Oh, I thought that was a local issue. I have that happening too. It's generally the first time during the day I login.

Based on the emails that are going 'round...."internally?" the issue should be fixed, however this is what is known/suspected about it:

When you close the tab or browser window, the server keeps the session alive for about 2 hours, after which you get logged out (which overrides the "forever" option in the cookie).  Chris did something last night that should fix it (neither he nor I experience the issue typically as we keep the forum up in a tab all the time).

I haven't had this problem, actually. I was apparently even still logged in when the site returned.

Well, it's easy to check. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I'm still logged in.

Nope. It still forgets me.

Nope. It still forgets me.

I'm seeing it too.  I've emailed D.A.

Though it did remember me today on my Linux box. So it just might be fixed?

I... okay, interesting.  Any other updates are appreciated, heh. :)

Well, it asked my login and password right now.
I'm on Linux and didn't tested that on Windows yet, BTW.

Yeah, windows box asked for password again. This is suprisingly inconsistent.

Just did it to me, too -- my computer updated last night and so it was closed down.

I made a change to the session timeout in SMF itself that may fix this.  Hopefully this will lead to sessions that last for 800 hours, we shall see.  Still not "forever," but quite good.

That would be about a month that you'd have to not be visiting the site, hopefully.

Even if it's every 33 days you have to reenter your password that's going to be more than sufficient.

Oh! It worked! It kept me logged in.

Forever = 33 days? Sounds enough.
