I'm not complaining that you guys are around, just that I'm not paying you.  You guys are exactly the ones I'd want doing this sort of work at this point, because holy cow you're doing amazing.  I realize that the prior post could have come off REALLY wrong, as if I was unhappy with the volunteers.  Quite the opposite. :)

Pffft. Robots are so last year (or whenever Choice of Robots came out). They're done, played out!

It's T-Rexes. (read right to left)

Speaking of that... I would be really hyped to hear about these new under-the-hood projects, Chris. I'm looking forward to see your kickstarter (my credit card is waiting near my keyboard, ready for action!) but don't you think your "freaking volunteers" deserve a little peek behind the curtain?

Okay, I beg...

If he tries to give just a peek, it's a decent probability that the entire curtain rack will just fall right off the window.  Maybe better that he doesnt  :P

And the low quality of that joke says it's about time for bed.

Pretty much in terms of the curtain rack, yeah.

Though I WILL say, I do think that I'll have a way to turn into a velociraptor and rage around.  Not as a major part of the game, just as one sort of... side thing.  I dunno, maybe it will be a kickstarter stretch goal and I'll build it out in more depth with that.  I was strongly considering mounting turrets on the side of a raptor as your main character for a little while, but I've wisely changed my mind. ;)

I might know more than Blue at this point, maybe? But I actually thought that your KS plans were for Arcen's Worst Kept Secret, so you saw my brain actually switching gears.

hey he's an idea how about the dinosaurs also be robotic or at least partly?. edit wait a minute if its going to have turrets does that mean it'll actually be a robot dinosaur? if so then I might actually use kick starter for the first time in my life.

isn't that sort of robotic? if so that's pretty rad now that I think about it theoretically having robotic types of creatures to encounter in the big wide world would be pretty sweet.

Good sir, you don't have to inform me of the fact!  My issue with the velociraptor is actually that the movie representations of them were oversized, and I prefer the members of their group that are actually that size, heh.

It was my understanding the size was based upon Utahraptor ostrommaysorum. Which due to Wikipedia I can say with a straight face.

There is something very primal about loving dinosaurs. I didn't think I would adore them so much. This has proven me wrong.
: Re: Insane discussion split of dinosaurs and turrets and freaking volunteers.
: x4000 February 22, 2016, 08:23:21 PM
Yeah, Utahraptor.  It would be my favorite for a variety of reasons -- and it is in Valley 1 or 2, I can't remember which -- but... that name.  So deinonychus it is, because the name sounds coolest.

A couple of points, though:

1. Dinosaurs are a really minor part of this in general.
2. There are a lot of other cool monsters, aliens, robots, and so on.  Most of them not humanoid, but some humanoid.
3. I'm not sure about robot dinos, but maybe.

I looked it up (quick search through the patch notes).  I played AVVW 1/2 a ton and didn't remember 100%.

Cool fact:  Utahraptor made an early beta appearance in AVVW2.  Placeholder graphic.

I didn't think I did!

Speaking of utahraptor, the life reconstruction image on Wikipedia was drawn by someone I know of another friend's character.
Here's his steam avatar:

The distinguishing markings on the muzzle and neck are clearly visible in the image on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utahraptor#/media/File:Utahraptor_updated.png).

Remember folks, dine on a kiss (http://d.facdn.net/art/ixerin/1391222940/1391222940.ixerin_dine_on_a_kiss.png)!

Wait...  Kickstarter?

Is that really a good idea?

I mean, the problem with Kickstarter is that you then have a pool of stakeholders who are attached to the initial project plan and not to what the project will be, and that has consequences for mid-project flexibility.
That seems to run directly against to how you guys do development.

Not to mention Kickstarter success has historically banked on existing fanbase as well as strength of first impression, which is also an area you don't have a good record on.

If you need funding, would Patreon be worth considering?
It's not as big as Kickstarter, but it can focus donations more towards the general works of a creator rather than an individual project, which is not quite as bad for mid-project flexibility.
: Re: Insane discussion split of dinosaurs and turrets and freaking volunteers.
: x4000 February 25, 2016, 04:07:04 PM
This project is... different.  Normally I completely agree with you.  But I think this one will both make a strong first impression, and it's not something that is going to have much in the way of design shifts throughout development.  I pretty much know exactly what I want out of this, because for the first time since the original AI War, I'm like "nobody builds this thing I want to play with someone, so f it I guess I'll do it."  My wife and I have been playing survival games together since 2009, and we want to keep doing so, but everything on the market has various issues that keep us from wanting to play them.  We have a pretty specific list of what we're looking for, and I aim to have all that in place before we even start a kickstarter.

Do I generally see kickstarter as a great idea for a company like Arcen?  No.  But that also doesn't mean I won't ever use it.  I see it as a marketing tool as much as anything else in this particular case.
