Very cool, Lars.  I have the email history, too, but hadn't gone back to it.  I guess we both wound up remembering "I'm not sure who exactly thought of the new thing, but it wasn't me." ;)  But yes, I remember how we were just really both riffing off each other's ideas there that summer of 2009, and the final format of Tidalis just kind of emerged unexpectedly.

It's a fun read; you should give it a look sometime. :)

Echo: I see. I can't remember what all Mr. Driller G offers; I haven't given it a play for a while. I'd imagine it's probably a straight improvement over the arcade Mr. Driller 2, though I imagine the home ports of these games likely have more features than the arcade ones. I should break out my JAMMA boards again and play this and other games, since it's been a while. I really like the Japanese version of Mr Driller: Drill Spirits, though. It's got a fantastic mode that was removed from the American release where you lose 1% of air every time you drill a block and can collect items that perform interesting functions. It's a very methodical, interesting experience that's so different from the usual gameplay. You have to do a lot of planning. Also, the Japanese version has single-card multiplayer (for up to 4 people, I think), which is a really great feature. I knew people in the dorms a few years back who had DS systems, and that single-card multiplayer was fantastic because few of us had the same games. Planet Puzzle League and True Swing Golf (amazingly fun game, even if you're not a golf game fan. It was made by T&E Soft, which also made the really awesome Golf for Virtual Boy) had it and were both huge hits, in particular. Being able to do multiplayer with just one copy of a game is really a great feature. :)

Ahh, the game store I work for has an Astro Arcade Cabinet with JAMMA boards. That's how I've been playing Magical Drop :P My friend who owns it is a big NeoGeo fan, so I probably won't see Mr. Driller unless the boards are pretty cheap. I do have a DS, I should check that one out too.
