Title: Netbook Ready?
Post by: CautiousChaos on June 14, 2010, 11:36:37 am
Hey folks,

I did a quick search but didn't find anything concrete - will Tidalis support netbooks with a resolution of 1024x600?

Yep!  Anything with 800x600 should be able to run the game, so far as we can tell.  Certainly we routinely test to make sure that resolution is capable of running the game well; the main question is if a given low-power GPU/CPU can run the game, but we've done a lot of work to make sure that lower-power computers (aka netbooks) should do well with the game.  We'll be really interested to hear what various folks with netbooks say, but we've had a few folks on netbooks reporting it works great (aside from some 800x600 sizing issues that we've since fixed).

Good question!

I'm playing it on an HP 2133 MiniNote with the following specs:
1.2 GHz single-core VIA processor
2 GB RAM
8.9" display, 1280 x 768

It runs fine.  I can't really tell if it runs any slower than it should, especially since on the netbook it plays as fast as the demo video does on my desktop.  It loads about as fast as any other game, and the mouse and game respond well.  I've never had a hangup or freeze even though it seems to max out my CPU.  The only possible criticism is the font is a bit small on a netbook screen, but it doesn't really affect playability.

By the way, I'm using Windows 7 and I think most programs (especially CPU-intensive games) run much better than under Vista.  I've also tweaked it to minimize background programs and services, eg, turning off unnecessary things like Aero, using Norton's Silent Mode, and getting rid of all the added crapware.

They did a good job of making it available to us netbookers.  Give it a try!

Cool! Thanks for the report on the netbook performance :)  Glad to hear it runs well on a 1.2GHz single-core, in particular.

Sounds somewhat high-end for a netbook on the memory size and resolution, but I honestly haven't kept up enough to know.  Anyway, glad it works.

Anyone else try it on more-limited-than-the-average-pc hardware?
