: Problem with Steam demo screen size
: citizenking August 13, 2010, 12:31:51 PM
Several weeks ago I downloaded the Steam demo. I changed the screen resolution, since when my monitor shows an error message saying resolution out of range when I try to run the demo. I have deleted it and re-installed it several times to no avail. Is there any way that I can change the resolution, so I can actually play the demo? The game is picking up good reviews and we'd like to have a go.

Many thanks,
citizenking

Hi there,

Sure thing -- sounds like you'd selected a screen resolution not supported by your monitor, sorry for the confusion there.  But, you can go into your steam apps folder for Tidalis, which on windows 7/Vista by default would be this:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\tidalis\

And then look inside the RuntimeData folder.  You'll see a file settings.dat, and another settings.bak.  Delete or rename both of those, and it will forget all your settings and you'll be good to go.  Alternatively, if you want to keep all your other settings except this one, you can open the settings.dat file in any text editor and then pretty near the top you will see lines for WindowWidth and WindowHeight, which refer to the fullscreen resolution, and you can set it to something your monitor definitely supports.  If that doesn't work, then removing the settings.dat file definitely will.

When you uninstall and reinstall the game from Steam, it doesn't touch the settings.dat files (or any other files that were added after the initial install from Steam, same as with all Steam games), so that's why the reinstall didn't help for this mis-configuration problem.

Hope that helps!

Thanks x4000. However it doesn't seem to have worked. I deleted what you said, the settings.dat file, no change. I deleted all the Tidalis download and reinstalled it again. Still nothing showing. Is there any hope?

Did you also delete the settings.bak file?  If you just deleted settings.dat, it would have just immediately have restored it from the backup.  Every last piece of relevant game data is in those two files, so if the game worked originally for you, and now doesn't, there should be no reason for it to not work now after those files are gone...
