Resolution and sides of screen
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:21:40 am »
Is there a default resolution size?  I notice when I use full screen and my resolution is over 1280 (I tend to prefer 1600 or 1680) the sides of the game are cut off.  Not lots, but enough for the mouse to disappear in the menus and for any pop-up help windows to be impossible to read.  Thanks.

That has more to do with your aspect ration than the absolute width, but the system requirements say "1280x720 recommended", and that is the best for not having any weirdness :)

That said, you shouldn't be having any help windows being cut off ever -- those are all scrollable, did you see the scrollbars?  Can you let us know what exact resolution you are using, if there does seem to be a problem?  We aren't aware of any such issues, but the game does use scrollbars for a lot of its windows.

Hi there.

Well, I am talking more about when, for instance, you are in the settings window and hover over each option - the pop-up help just scrolls off the right side and I cannot seem to fix this without resorting to a lower resolution (I don't see scrollbars but I feel we are talking two separate things).  I mean that's fine as that does work, but I was curious if there was something else I could do.

I tend to use 1680x1050 generally, but 1280x720 is probably better anyway as there's no black bars at the top or bottom of the game then.

Hmm, that is really odd -- it should be wrapping to the side of your screen, and showing the extra text just on a second line.  Could you either post a screenshot or let us know specifically which controls do that?  I can't duplicate that at all, it's odd that you're seeing this...

Hi again.

It is odd.  When I use print screen and paste in Photoshop I get this (at 1680x1050 - my resolution):

However in the game I only have the black bars at the top and bottom - the black bars at the side are cut off and so obviously the text is too (although I'm not sure why it's all surrounded by black anyway).

Okay, this is making a lot more sense now -- thanks so much for the screenshot!

The game is actually running at a larger resolution, but your monitor is just cropping rather than scaling the image.  If you use a smaller resolution that should work, but I imagine that if any other DirectX/OpenGL programs (or at least Unity 3D programs for sure) are run at this larger resolution, then that would cause the problem.  It may be something funky with your graphics card drivers (you could try updating them), or some limitation with your monitor (you could look that up, or there may even be updated drivers for them).  I once had an older laptop that did something similar to this, but in reverse: if I ran programs fullscreen at smaller resolutions than its 800x600 default, then it showed them with black borders, rather than scaling the image up like you'd expect.

At any rate, regarding why there are black bars at that resolution, I'd point you to this: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Tidalis_-_Common_Technical_Support_Questions#I_set_the_screen_resolution_higher_than_1280x768.2C_and_now_I_have_black_bars

From the look of things, you'll want to use a smaller resolution (if the driver update doesn't work), because it isn't scaling down like it should to fit your actual monitor pixels (apparently 1680x1050 is more pixels than is native to your display, I'd guess), or this is some ultra rare bug in Unity 3D, or this is some problem with your driver.

Thanks much for the added clarity, this is definitely a new one on me!  Sorry for the trouble you're having there.

I have to try this when I get home, because it confused me a lot that you could choose 1900x1280 and then over that have the game resolution. I think this is acting different than most other games.
