"Normal" difficulty shield level (possible save/restore bug)

Hey all,

After playing for about two hours on normal/normal difficulty settings, I bit off more than I could chew, died, and restored a saved game.  At this point, I noticed that I had only about 27k shield.  Previously I had enjoyed a luxurious 166k or so.  Puzzled, thinking I had perhaps missed an in-game dialogue of some kind, I restored an earlier saved game, and discovered that I had a mere 27k shield there as well, right before a battle in which I know for a fact I sucked up about 450k of shield damage.

Anybody else experience this?  What is the standard level of shields for a game on normal difficulty?  Was my first play-though in error, or are all my saved games in error?

Downloaded from Steam this morning, Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit.

That happened to me too, so it's probably normal. I'd guess the shields are high to start with so that you can't die on the first mission.
The shields recharge too, so that'll be how you got the 450k damage on a 27k shield.

Same here.  If you never load the game, you get to keep that massive initial hull/shield combo for the entire game :)
Of course, if you save/load during that initial battle, it also resets your stats down to the minimum level, so that'll hurt.
It looks to me like shield/hull bonuses from Technology are also not being applied until a save/load cycle has completed.
