Title: Please read if you are interested in the alpha! Sort yourselves, please. :)
Post by: x4000 on January 13, 2014, 11:30:41 AM
Hey folks!  As mentioned in another thread (http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,14738.0.html), we're going to be doing multiple rounds (as usual) for the alpha.  Here is a brief description of each round.

Round 0 - Least Polished
Starting: Either the week of January 20th or the week of January 27th.

This round is going to have a GUI that is functional, but not fully prettied-up yet.  Some subscreens won't be in yet, a number of planetary background graphics and ship animations won't be in place yet, and so forth.  Mostly these are cosmetic things, and we will be asking people in this round not to give us feedback on those yet since they are still in progress and you'll likely be telling us things we already know.  The focus here will instead be on gameplay mechanics -- figuring out if there is anything broken/exploitable there, where things are confusing, how the learning curve is, etc, etc.  Since this round of people are first to play the game outside of the company, they're going to have the highest rate of confusion and broken stuff, simply by nature.  So if you're looking for a smooth first experience, this is not the round for you.

Round 1 - GUI More In Place
Starting: Either the week of January 27th or the week of February 3rd.

This round is going to have the bulk of the GUI fully in place and as polished as we think it needs to be.  There will still be a variety of visual details that are yet to come on here, but nothing that is a major deal or that would affect functionality.  There will likely still be subscreens missing that are of very secondary importance, but it shouldn't be anything that should affect you in a major way at all.  The new user experience should be substantially better than round 0 in all respects, as we'll have the feedback from the first round, and a week's worth of refinement in design and coding and art based on our own plans and based on that feedback.  This is still going to be comparably rough in terms of balance and details compared to later rounds, though.

Round 2 - Getting More Polished
Starting: Either the week of February 3rd or the week of February 10th.

This round is going to be substantially more polished, and it should give players a very good idea of what the game is really going to be like at launch.  There will still be nits and bits and bobs all over the place that we'll be dealing with, but it's little details much moreso than major stuff.

Round 3 - Final Polish
Starting: Either the week of February 10th or the week of February 17th.

This round is going to be very close to final.  We'll basically be pulling in a last round of testers to do checks on how all the other feedback prior to this point has culminated, and to get an idea of how new people will react to the game on launch (in terms of ease of learning, etc).  This will also be a chance for us to get yet more eyes on the game and thus have yet more clever people finding exploits or whatever else that we and the other testers might have missed prior to this point.

Other/Intermediate Rounds
Depending on timing and other factors, we might do "multiple round 2s" on a shorter time schedule, or have a round 4 that is basically yet even more final polish, or some things like that.  The above 4 rounds are basically an estimate of what we are going to do, and either way they definitely map to the general life stages of the process of getting from alpha to 1.0, regardless of how many batches of players are actually let in at a given time.  Just as an FYI, if we wind up letting in 3 groups of people and you were in round 2 and wonder why you aren't in yet -- we might be doing two groups in round 1, still.

So -- Please Tell Us Where You Want To Be
We have gotten a lot of PMs from folks who are interested in the alpha, and that is awesome.  We have them all, don't worry!  What were going to have to do from here, however, is to sort people into which rounds we want to have them testing in.  We need both expert and comparably-casual players in each round, ideally.  Just having all of our most-expert players in the first two rounds would not be very smart, if you see what I mean.

So!  We've had folks in past alphas who were a little bit offended that they didn't get into whatever round, because they have been such fixtures in the Arcen alphas for so many years, etc.  To avoid that this time around, we ask that folks please give us your first, second, and third choices of what rounds you would like to enter the alpha at.  Or if you only have one or two rounds that you want to be entered at, then let us know that as well (for instance, maybe you really don't want to be in prior to round 2 -- that's actually awesome, because too many people tend to want to get in as soon as possible, and so having some people hang back is good).

We will then try to balance out everyone's desires as much as possible, while at the same time having a good mix of people in every round.  Feel free to comment in this thread or PM Chris (x4000), either way.  If you previously expressed interest in the alpha and he doesn't hear from you, he'll be PMing you back.  If he still doesn't hear from you, then he'll be assigning you to whichever rounds are most in need of people.

Thanks for reading!

I would prefer to start testing on February 3rd, and I'm a moderately skilled player. I'll be busy most of the time in January, but I'll be able to start testing in any round in February.

I'm fine with my first experience being not smooth. I'm the not smoothest guy around.

People seriously need to chill out.  Participation in an invitation-only event is a privilege, not a right.  If you've been an alpha / beta tester in the past, you should count yourself lucky that (1) you got into an alpha/beta at all, and (2) you were testing for a company that usually gives its testers a free copy of the full game when it's finished.

They were never jerks about it or anything.

That said, I should point out that if the current trend continues, I'm simply not going to be able to get everyone in the round of their first choice (mostly because round 0 is so popular :) ). If that happens, I apologize. I hope you understand that it really doesn't do us any good to have 30 folks be the fist to see it, then have only 10 others (or whatever number) be split with the other rounds.

Honestly I don't feel like anyone has been out of line at all.  These are folks who have devoted incredible amounts of time and energy to helping us make our games better, far in excess of the value of the games we've given them in exchange.  These are often folks that then turned around and bought the games anyway and evangelized to friends and other forums because they believe in the games they've helped with.  They didn't flip out or anything, or get all huffy or mad, but they were definitely a bit miffed that we didn't think of them earlier in the process.  I feel like that feeling is extremely understandable and in some ways actually justified -- but from our end, our rationale is that we actually want to save some of those sorts of people for at least round 2 and 3, because having those sorts of eyes on the game fresh in those states is really useful to us.

I've been involved in plenty of software development, roughness won't phase me. I'd be very interested in helping out with the game from the earliest point possible!
And no hard feelings if I don't get in the early round ;)

Hello! I would love to be a part of the Alpha, but I do not need it to be so early. Phase 3 would work best for me.

Thanks so much for extending this oppurtunity! I hope everything goes well!

2. Round 3
3. Round 0

It will be interesting to see what I can contribute if I'm so late to the party... ;D

ROUND ZERO OR BUST!!!

Well seriously, my preference would probably be something more like:

Round 2/1
Round 0
Round 3 ( I feel like it's difficult to give feedback when it's that close to release )

I would like to participate, and happen have some software/game development experience so I can take an early round.

Preference in order:
Rounds 1, 2, 3.

Never participated in an alpha before, but very interested in this game. If you need more testers, then I would be happy to try it out.
(I really enjoy the other Arcen strategy titles and have a technical background)

Preference:
1. Round 2
2. Round 3
3. Round 1

I'll be up for some alpha testing, if you'll have me. I'd prefer Round 2 or thereabouts, but I'm fine wherever testers are needed the most.

(And yes, I know I don't have very many posts, because I'm not really a very active forum participant. But I'd just like to say in my defense that 1) I do own several Arcen games - AI War and all expansions, Bionic Dues, Skyward Collapse and expansion - and have attempted to talk friends into buying them before, occasionally with success, and 2) I also have experience as a beta tester, as I helped with the development of Monaco: What's Yours is Mine. I've also done some proofreading for assorted tabletop RPGs, but I'm not sure how useful that would be.)

I'd prefer to be in as early as possible, just for the reason that most of my input seems to come in the earlier stages of development.  Round 0 would be great, but I'll be happy with the first available, too.

Having a bunch of posts or not doesn't actually effect your chances. :)

I pay attention to who gets selected in terms of who has done testing for us in the past, mostly because I know what to expect from them. But, we like a good mix of folks we know and folks we don't in each round.

3, 2, 0

I'd prefer to be in Round 1 or 3/4

I'm more effective\interested in checking balance and looking for exploits than commenting on GUI design or attempting devise a better system of data reports.

Of course, if I'm not in, I'll just have to wait to buy it, and that wouldn't upset me either!

I'm looking more toward helping sort things out after things are fairly established, quality-of-life enhancements.

The goal, if the mode shall be followed, is that if I play it out of the box I won't encounter a hiccup that causes me to stop playing. I followed this model in SC and there I felt I gave the most help as compared to BD or AVWW 2 .In volume it wasn't much, but the point was I stopped if I had to give much in the first place.

It wasn't much in volume, no, but it was really really valuable feedback.

Hmm... Well, as your not-very-local new guy, I think I could go with this order:

1) Round 1
2) Round 2
3) Round 3

It's easy to remember, no? I figure it's a good balance between something where I'll actually notice something nobody else did, and the point where the game crashes to desktop with horrifying arcane crash messages that are probably of help to nobody. =3

My preference would be
1 - Round 3
2 - Round 2
3 - Round 1

Any round is good for me and i can write detailed reports and provide plenty of screenshots if needed. I have worked on a big Civilization IV : Beyond the Sword mod team ( I can PM you), so I understand how alpha/betas work and how to provide bug and game experience reports.

I mostly play space 4x games but I consider myself an intermediate player.

Any round is good for me.

Hi,
I've never been in any alpha, but I'd like to help. Just I don't know how much effort it will take. Is there a minimum amount of time you expect us to devote to the alpha? Because at the moment I can play 1 or 2 hours/day (a bit more during weekends) but I'm not sure if it is enough for you.

I reported several bugs on mantis, so you can have an idea about my skill in that, if you need.
I also reported bugs for games like widelands, ottd, freeciv, etc... so I think I've quite an experience in that.

if it is enough, feel free to put me in any group at any stage, according to your needs.

A few hours during the course of a week is usually considered "enough", I think.
Although they will sure take what they can get beyond that ;D.

My sense of aesthetics is lacking, so an unpolished GUI doesn't offend as long as it works.

Looking forward to the alpha and another fantastic Arcen title :-)

Gotta start squashin' them bugs as soon as possible, after all!

And I always have nothing but free time anyway.

Ah, yeah, those patience cards...

Someone tried to give me a new one recently, but it burst into flames when I tried to grab it.

All the more reason for jumping in as soon as possible.

Unlike during the AVWW alpha, I actually have considerable amounts of free time on my hands for the foreseeable future.  If you all want to throw me into round two or three, I'll be able to give the game a few passes through or possibly write up an AAR somewhere to see if I can't get some others interested.

I'll be buying the game in February either way, though.  ;D

I would prefer round 0 or barring that as early as possible, so I can spend the most amount of time with it and comment on how it plays.

I'm not really a stranger to incomplete or wonky interfaces, mostly due to a lot of games I play having rather nasty interfaces even when finished.
That and I find that others often find my idea of a what makes a "good interface" a bit questionable, so it's probably better for others who are not me to comment on the GUI.  :P

Also, personally I re-visit games very easily and pretty often so I don't mind diving in early.

I would love to join this testing on Round 0. I don't mind bugs, broken stuff or an ugly GUI(I play Dwarf Fortress, for God's Armok's sake!) And well, I'm the kind of guy that buys Early Access games all the time, so I'm used to broken stuff :P

Would be more than glad to assist with testing whatever phase testers are needed for.  Seeing as I own every Arcen game (some multiple copies of) I am sure I will be buying TLF when it comes out so would love to help test for bugs and what not to help the product out.   I have two machines I can test on one is Windows 7 64bit and the other is Windows 8.1 64bit.

I'm interested in joining at round 3 if you need any more testers. Everyone knows I'm ready to offer constructive criticism when necessary, though I think I'd rather do that once all the major game features are firmly in place, as to keep my suggestions a little more focused/reasonable.

Hey guys.

Id be glad to participate in the alpha. I'm more of a casual player. I'm a lifelong gamer, have all the Arcen games and would love to help.

Id do any or all rounds, but would prefer....

Round 2

Round 1

Round 3

Whichever you can get me in would be great! Thanks!

I would like to join the alpha in round 0. I'm definitely fine with having a barely working GUI, as I play Dwarf Fortress. I have been in a lot of betas and alphas for other games, and am okay with bugs. My second option would be round 1 and my third option would be round 2.

Hi - I'd like to be considered for the alpha if you please.  I've sent a PM to tigersfan with details (which I hope is still the thing to do?), but just to summarize here:

Don't mind which round, slot me in wherever is convenient, but if you want a preference to help decide then I'd prefer round 1, if not then round 0, then round 2 or 3.

Hope all goes well with the project, it's looking great so far!

bought almost every single one that you guys have made :D i LOVE
Ai War so i'm dying to see how this game turns out....
please let me be a tester too! *makes puppy dog eyes*

My preference would be
stage 2
stage 3
stage 1
stage 0
but to be honest i'd love to be in all 4 if possible :D

I've been mostly lurking on the forums for 1.5-2 years now. didn't really register on the forum
till i wanted my steam key for Ancient Shadows..... There's bound to be a lot of other lurkers like me
as well. Just because we don't post that much on the forums does not mean we cant be passionate
about anything Arcen makes. :) (I do intend to post about any bugs i find and general feedback about
the last federation though...)

I am a noob on the forums. Like (and learning) AI war - going to try and suck my 12 year old son into it so we can have some co-op goodness. He and I have had some epic supreme commander games in the past...

In any case would love to help test. I will save my background for the other forum areas, but I am a dev (Linux) and game on Windows when it requires me to. I will help in any phase deemed appropriate.

I flew the Arcen Nest for a bit to indulge in EU4, Project Zomboid and DayZ, but if you still want testers (dunno if I asked before by PM, probably not), i'd go with in order of preference:

Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Round 0

Reply to me soon and i'll throw in a Bionic Dues purchase and Skyward Collapse: Nihon no Mura, to once again complete my Arcen Games Collection...and Vengeance of the Machine since I seem to have misplaced my code I bought when it was in Beta. >_>

P.S: I may say Round 0 is my least requested, but it's my Birthday on the 27th...just saying...

I am also super interested in helping test this game, I love AI wars and cant wait to see what you do with the psuedo-4x style this game has.

I don't and won't have much free time so I would mostly like to be in the later rounds of testing (2-3) if you need me. I also intend to purchase the game at least once, I really support your development philosophy and don't like the thought of taking food out of the mouths of my favorite developers.

Thanks for all the hard work, and I look forward to spending many, many, hours enjoying this game one way or another.

I a couple of months ago I got a lot of Arcen games from various bundles, and I really enjoyed them. I went to your website to see if you had made other games, and found out that you were making The Last Federation. I occasionally checked the progress of it and one of those times I found this thread.

Ha, what can I say? I've just liked some of your output quite a bit these days (I'm a particular fan of Bionic Dues, even if I'm currently too much of a sissy to advance past "Normal" despite stomping it into the ground three times ;3), and I wouldn't mind trying to take a crack at helping out. If nothing else, I'm really digging the concepts you've got in mind for this game, it sounds almost like a version of Star Control 2 where every race is relevant throughout the entire game and interacts more.

I'm personally just hoping that the combat's simple enough for me to not get completely overwhelmed by like I felt in AI War (why do I feel iron pitchforks being raised at me?).

Hey folks,

Good idea on the organisation, I think this would save a lot of potential unhappiness in the future although I imagine some will always be disappointed.

I don't really mind where I get placed but bear in mind I am a casual player so will be quite sensitive to hard difficulties - see my rant from my first playthrough in the Bionic Dues alpha where I got absolutely squished. So if you need players of that 'calibre' in the early phases or late phases then go ahead. Happy to help whenever. :)

Normally I would skip such events but I would like to be more involved in the community since you guys produce some of my favourite games. So in saying that my choices are:

Round 1

Looking forward to the final release!

Friend just told me about this time, looks great!
ArcenGames has always made creative and awesome games!

I did beta-test few games and so, but I don't think I was a huge help. :(
I clearly am a good beta tester, but I'm atleast an above the average gamer.
I would be interested in any of the Phases. Whichever I am needed.
If interested, I could also upload few videos on my Youtube Channel (it is very small though), if that helps. ='D

Either way, do keep up the good work AcrenGames!

I have logged 45 hours of AI war on steam and nearly 120 hours on the humble bundle version. I am quite skilled at RTS's and Sims and know how to troubleshoot and find bugs.
I am capable of playing the game during any period.

Very excited for The Last Federation for a while now (trumps many upcoming titles/expansions/dlcs for me). I aimed to join the fun at the earliest public release (preorders as usual?), but I keep lurking these forums and your blog posts (you keep teasing me with "Alpha Information!" in those). I don't generally bother people with feedback in game testing, as those are usually more of a publicity stunt than I'd like. Yet, you guys are awesome. Lurked for years, love you, know how you roll and respect you for it. Would love to provide feedback to you guys.

Just as a note, I have everyone down from before this post.  That includes you, Teal!  And everyone who PM'd tigersfan.  We have about 111 people in total on the list of alpha testers, and I think we've so far let in about 30ish, so we're really spreading things out in terms of letting people in slowly.  This helps us managing the volume of feedback we get, and of course getting waves of first impressions is really important.

So that's why I'm not on this list (http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,14968.0.html).

Yep, I just did an exact count, and we have 109 people signed up, 52 people not yet added, and (as of yesterday) 57 in.  When I claimed we had 30ish, looks like we actually had 46.  So I was in the ballpark. ;)

Some of our most experienced previous alpha testers have not been added in yet (hi madcow and nas1m and chemical_art and Wingflier and Penumbra and Shrugging Khan, among others), because we're trying to spread both new people and experienced mantisers throughout the entire process.  We only get one shot at your first impression! :)

Not sure I'd be a useful alpha tester but I'm really excited for the game. Judging by the few youtube videos it looks like a fascinating game, and also your best looking game to date :) Can't wait to buy this.

I should still have a functioning MantisBT account too.

Let me know if you need another tester else i'll see you all in the preorder :)

I've been keeping abreast of the development updates and realized I never threw my hat in the ring... so consider it thrown, any round. I beta tested Drox Operative and got a lot of my suggestions implemented and bugs fixed, so I'm clearly of the highest caliber. ;) Along with some previous Arcen betas (Bionic Dues primarily) and post-release Mantis fun.

Would be interested in testing. :) I waffled on this since the site says it's coming out in April, but since I see nothing on Steam yet, I am glad to see a developer not in a rush to release a half cocked game so I'd like to help out.

Well, I've been floating around the Arcen forums for a couple of days after picking up AI War again, and I stumbled across Last Federation. After reading/watching and catching up on it, I can say that this game looks DAMN GOOD.

Count me in if you need people.

I'm a little late to the game, but I'd be thrilled to help shore up whatever aspect is most beneficial.

I'm constructive, concise without being too verbose, and I love finding ways to game a system.  (read: break things)

Awesome stuff. :)

For those who weren't added tonight, I'll likely add most of you tomorrow night.  No point collecting first impressions of folks if they don't actually have time to look at it!  That said, if there are latecomers throughout the week who have time to give first impressions, then I'll be taking on those folks, too.

So far there are 14 people remaining on my list of not-yet-added, and 121 people already added as testers.

hey folks,

Since reading the early design briefs you posted for this game i have been looking forward to seeing what you would all come up with. I have been trying to keep myself away from the Arcen site so as not to end up spoiling a game I am very excited about.

however, when i saw the game on Steam and the approaching release date it finally broke my resolve and i checked the Arcen website for a video of your new title... got to say I'm more excited than ever to get my hands on this.... particularly looking forward to the idea that my combat/mission actions have real meaning and consequence in the game-long bigger picture/grand strategy, and turn based ship combat in space with 'terrain' actually looks quite engaging and unique. :)

So just wanted to say best of luck with the release... and offer myself for 'more or less blind' testing if your still interested in new feedback. I'm running a linux system if you could use testers for the linux build. I have plenty of time this weekend and every evening this coming week to get into the game and give you some feeback..... and if i'm a bit late then no worries, and i look forward to the demo and then hopefully buying another great Arcen title. ;)

I'd be happy to help test as well. I heard about the concept when it was first announced, loved the idea, but haven't actually followed any of the development. >.< So I guess that makes a good blind tester, but I love your guys work so it probably makes me a poor fan. ^_^

I run two distro's of Linux, Ubuntu/Fedora as well as Windows8 so I could test on all these OS's on both a desktop/laptop system, if that's helpful. I have the next 3 days off before I go back to work though where I'll have slightly limited time, but regardless I should be able to at least give it a solid poke.

The original, version 1.0 of AI War? 4, if you count me. :)

Prior to 2.0 I'm not sure how many people were giving feedback, but it was somewhere around this many.  For most of the AI War expansions it's been in this ballpark, too, in terms of people actually giving feedback.  All of our other titles have had substantially fewer, but none have had fewer than 40ish since Tidalis (which I don't believe had any).

There was a public beta phase with Tidalis.  Roughly I think there were maybe 30 testers.
