How do you improve your flagship?

Topic says it all. I've seen (and done) the missions to do things like get new special abilities, but how do you increase things like your shield & hull amounts? Is that done through research? None of the research options available on the planets that like me seem to involve my ship at all.

So, any tips?

all "space power: ..." techs give increased hull/shield health

And if you want to research those you will likely need one or more of the following :
- A bunch of scientist goons (from the black market)
- A science outpost (from whereever - haven't had one yet )
- A sponsor to research the tech with (preferably the Andors/Skylaxians) either as a dispatch or political deal

Science goons are expensive, but I've been trading techs around after I get them with friendly people and that seems to be boosting everyone's like of everyone else. So it's working out okay.
