LP of TLF The Lost Technologies - New player, advice welcome
« on: November 14, 2015, 10:31:50 am »
Hey there!

I've decided to do a LP of the game, it seems like an interesting concept as i like the indirect manipulation in games such as "Majesty" and thought i'd give it a go.
The Game seems really advanced and i've already spent some time trying to learn it through videos and light gameplay, so for my own sake i thought i'd do it in a tutorial-esque style, as explaining things always helps in learning new stuff and the reasoning behind certain actions.

I'd appreciate any advice you guys have for dealing with a friendly approach to federation creation :) or better yet if i make any mistakes throughout the game so i can correct them :-[

Artifacts:
Burlust have the Mire
Acutians have the Ark

Playlist for the playthrough

The Youtube playlist is in reverse order.

Other than that, good stuff. Good microphone, clear and understandable voice. Dropped game related advice into the youtube comments. I don't think I've ever gotten more than three races into the federation so I'm not the most qualified person to talk about friendly approaches to federation creation :P

Getting all the races into the Federation isn't as fun as getting fewer races. With a total race situation you have to babysit everyone and be preemptive about attacks. You won't be able to stop a 800 power Thoraxian Warfleet from nuking the Andors, so don't let it happen in the first place. You also end up not fighting very much because of the massive attitude loss caused by combat. I would suggest you pick X races to form the Federation and then treat the others as acceptable losses.

In combat, you'll usually want max energy to fire power, 3 to shields, and 1 to movement. When you lose about half shield, full power to movement, the remainder to shields, and get out of there. You want to engage enemies one at a time. The difference between minimal, medium, and maximum power is really big. In order to take advantage of that you need to arrange a series of 1 on 1 duels. It is faster and more fun (to me) this way as well. You don't have to be too extreme about ensuring 1 on 1 duels, but keeping enemies isolated is important. You can mouse over ships and projectiles to see how dangerous they are and to choose the best way to deal with them. Don't forget your special abilities almost always have a secondary effect of neutralizing all shots, you can use this to regain shields amidst combat.

Get to know all of the Races and the interactions you can have with the races. That's the meat of the game, and there isn't an easy way around learning them, it will take some effort.
You need the Energy Blaster weapon, go try buying it at the Black Market. It is expensive, but makes combat much easier.

Ljas - Thanks for your replies :) I've also reversed the youtube playlist. I'm also immensely appreciative about the compliments on the microphone sound and quality as i've experimented a lot to try and get it crisp, though still ways off from a sound proofed room.

ptarth - This is also what i've gathered, that some races will have to be acceptable losses. The Utopian dream that the Andorians and I share seems to be just that, a dream. in any case i'm going to give it a try :P
The finer combat advice is really useful as i haven't gotten around to really look at the numbers in combat in regards to the stats when at max power compared to low power.
I ended up getting the Mass driver while buying mysterious tech and replaced the spreadshot for it.

Is it wise to focus on the Andor or are they too weak ?

It's not a dread. It's an achievement!

This reminds me..
Since the tutorials hide the announcement bar on the right until later, we don't know who won and lost the initial dice roll that's meant to make different playthroughs more varied. You might want to check all the planets, either by right clicking or going there and pressing the planet details button, and seeing under the Existing Buildings tab. If a race controls the Ark, you can expect them to be a strong player in the solar system. If a race has the Mire, they're probably going to be struggling to survive through the game.
Planetary compatability also plays a big part so even a race with the Mire can survive if they're otherwise doing fine.

Yeah, if one race gets the Ark and you plan on murdering them, do it early.  If you leave them to last they'll be impossible to conquer (birth rate will be too high).

The Andors should work just fine, I think (Currently focusing on them in my current game).

While Ark and Mire certainly play a big role, it's not that a race is doomed just because it has the Mire (at least in my experience). Again my current game: Skylaxians have the Mire, they are alive and well in my Federation of Andors, Skylaxians and Boarines, while the Burlust have the Ark, but can't set a foot beyond their planet, because the Thoraxians are keeping them on the ground.

Curious how that will work out in the end...

yea the mires nothing to worry about to much Its not to be horrible and evil its just a little mundane compared to the ark really. ps haven't really had the chance to watch your lets so I'm going to assume you don't know this already murdering the burlusts prime sends the burlusts and makes them impossible to keep under your thumb.

You can sort the tech grid by clicking on the race icons at the top of the display.
If you do want a peaceful game you need to decide how you are going to handle the Thoraxians and the Burlust now. They will attack, its only a matter of time. You either need to cripple their fleets or to boost the power of the other races' fleets. Of course, if you increase the other races' fleets, they will become more warlike themselves.
To get races to join the Federation they need to like the race that is inviting them into the Federation, or they need to like you. Plan ahead on developing those relationships.
Developing the all race Federation is possible, it just isn't as fun as creating a Federation with fewer races.
AP is much better than the spreadshot. You'll still want the Energy Blaster, but it also depends on how much fighting you are doing yourself.

Developing moons and starting races trading with each other is a viable next step. It is also one of the few recurring attitude options. Others include: Racial Buildings, maintaining good planetary conditions on the RCS sliders (not available to you yet), and being friendly with other races. Also of course are the warring attitude changes for allies and joint defenses, but those will anger the attacking race.

There's a report on mantis right now of the Andors being impossible to exterminate.  They have the Ark and six of their production factories (being the last race alive in betrayal mode).  Their birthrate hit the hardcap (it would have been 56133/mo. but the cap is ~5600).

I have to say it's awesome to see all these comments and i'm certainly learning a lot.
Game seems fun and intriguing, enough for me to consider a full LP instead of the 7 episodes, i primarily play for my own enjoyment but it's cool to see the interest in it from others too :)
I've also listed the races with the mire and ark in the original post for convenience.

ptarth - i tried reading up a bit on trading and i've currently established moon colonies for both the Andor and Peltians, is it right that when they reach a certain number of goods that they'll begin to trade ? or is it an action i have to initiate, because i haven't for the life of me been able to find it.

My thoughts so far is that getting a relationship up between the Andor and Peltians are vital for both of their continued survival as well as giving them both a tech advantages in form of defence.
The Acutians i'm a bit on the cautious side of helping in any form, since they hold the ark. Should i handicap them power wise or just boost the other races ?
It does seem a bit annoying at times that the game takes itself such a long time between doing stuff to tell about new things, like the ark :P

Most (not all) races will trade once they have sufficient extra minerals of sort Y and not enough extra minerals of sort X AND another race has the reverse situation. You then need to create a trade route within their racial actions using the broker trade route action. Some races can also set up trade routes for other races. They will not trade on their own.  Increasing Peltian and Andor relations is a decent plan, not that they will not be very likely to help each other out defensively (in a useful way), so you'll have to bolster both of their defenses.

re:ark. In some sense it doesn't do much, in others it is very powerful. If you look at the Racial Power comparisons you can see some of the effect of the Ark on the various powers of the Races. The big ones are birthrate and research. Compare the Acutians to the other races and make your plans based on that.

I've tried boosting the lunar colonies further to boost resources for the different races.
Is there a way to see the amount of resources a race holds, or is it arbitrary ? as in the colonized lunar colony itself is the "amount" ?

The Advisor, Graphs and event log is also really starting to come together. It really helps in planning moves, i'd wish the game was faster in introducing it.

Yeah, the introduction of new stuff can be a bit slow. Especially if it's not your first game and you're wondering where feature/data point XYZ went since the last time you played. The planet overview should tell you everything you need to know (remaining uncolonised moons, resource income, etc.), but maybe it's not fully unlocked yet.
