Sound effects suggestions?
« on: March 14, 2014, 04:35:30 pm »
The game now has sound effects for all the weapons and abilities and ships blowing up and so forth.  If there seems to be something with a missing sound effect, or a particularly annoying sound, or whatever, then feel free to comment please.  In a lot of respects this is the first pass, although we have only limited means to work with in terms of sound banks.  If you know of sound effects that are free or that are royalty-free that you would like to suggest to us for use in certain contexts, by all means please do!

We've used places like this before:

http://www.freesound.org/
http://www.soundsnap.com/
http://www.boomlibrary.com/ (a lot of the sounds in use are from here)

Anyway, you're free to search those first two libraries for suggestions if you want, or if you have other sources you'd like to suggest, then please feel free.  The sound work is always a hugely tedious and time consuming and (for me) frustrating part of game creation, so crowdsourcing this a tad strikes me as not a bad idea. :)

Few more sites you might want to hit up, if you don't already use them:
http://www.pdsounds.org
http://soundbible.com
http://opengameart.org
http://free-loops.com

If you feel like rummaging through someone else's basement, the Zero-K team collated a large number of free sound effects that might be useful for our game (ground-based sci-fi RTS) here.  Unfortunately I don't know of an easier way to download them than to check out the repository branch in SVN, but it's there if you want to take a look (just make sure you check the text files for the licenses before you use them though; some of them may be CC-NonCommercial or such).

Gonna pretty much spam possible alternative sound effects here, if you don't mind. Gonna be editing this quite a lot as I look through the different sound sites.

First up, the current Energy Blaster is good quality, but it just doesn't sound like an energy blaster to me. Possible alternatives:

Freesound

http://www.freesound.org/people/junggle/sounds/28917/ -- maybe a bit too beefy, though

http://www.freesound.org/people/fins/sounds/191594/ -- seems decent

http://www.freesound.org/people/bubaproducer/sounds/151022/

http://www.freesound.org/people/soundslikewillem/sounds/190707/ -- maybe a bit too mushy

http://www.freesound.org/people/NHumphrey/sounds/204433/ -- interesting, but maybe a bit tinny

Soundsnap

http://www.soundsnap.com/node/10386 -- decent blaster sound at the start, goes into a sine wave, though, watch your ears

http://www.soundsnap.com/node/15702

http://www.soundsnap.com/node/15640 -- pretty good

http://www.soundsnap.com/node/16022 -- clean, bog standard laser

http://www.soundsnap.com/node/9033 -- no frills

Rather than spamming dozens and dozens of links here, I've started favouriting any interesting TLF-ish sounds (on Soundsnap) which should be available on my profile here:

This one I pulled, but the rest I found were too harsh, or I already had used them in the past in AI War and found various downsides, etc.

Yeah, I knew there wouldn't be many that fitted the bill. Oh well, one potentially useful sound to add to your collection is still cool. Oh, I'm presuming you already checked the ones favourited on my soundsnap profile, but if you haven't, don't forget to check those out, too.

Yep, I got them!

And I finally took some time to go back through some new sound banks that I got a few weeks back, and added another 140 sounds to the game.  A couple more from The Recordist, who is another one I've used before and really liked: http://www.therecordist.com/

What I really need is a professionally-designed sci-fi weapons/effects pack from some place like that.  I have the one from The Recordist, and the related BOOM SFX stuff, but finding things of that quality that have yet more variety is hard.  On hi-fi speakers, most of the stuff from the free sources (and soundsnap, really) is kind of crap.  It's fuzzy, it's mono, it's often piercing, etc.

Yeah. I see what you mean. Being restricted to free stuff reduces the quality a bit. Maybe I'll have a look around for some higher quality sound packs that you might be interested in.
