How do you deal with disasters ?
« on: June 08, 2014, 12:31:14 pm »
I try to put the RCI of my planets in the positive everytime (with friendly actions, buildings, Andor's help etc), but when a disaster append everything become out of control.

Some RCI value drop so low that it takes a lots of time to restore it to 0.
In addition to this, when disasters append on more that one planet in a short time there is absolutly nothing that I can do.

I may be missing something so I'm asking you for your tips to deal with the disasters.

Thanks  ;)

[Edit] :
I'm talking about the events like Nuclear Plant Accident, Mass Riots , Global Warming etc.

The only hint I can think of is making extra sure to do what you can to bring RCI back to normal values as soon as possible to (at least try to) prevent even worse follow up events from spawning. These can trigger a definite downward spiral of doom where nothing you can do whatsoever will change things anymore.

Some technologies also grant extra monthly boosts to various RCI values iirc.

Aside from that I am as lost as you, and would like to know the answer as well ;D.

EDIT: Might well be that the techs I thought about only give access to a building providing the described benefits, though...

With things like the disasters, a lot of that is a matter of having to revise your plans somewhat.  In other words, that's kind of the uncertainty factor (no plan survives contact with the enemy or reality).  Some of those things can be outright prevented by techs, but a lot of them can't.  In the aftermath of something bad that happens, it's always going to be situation-dependent as to what you do next.

You might spend some time rebuilding their RCI or population or pursuing a vaccine or whatever (as the case warrants).  Or you might now treat that race as a "fall guy" so to speak to get what you want with other races.  In other words, it's really hard to make everyone like you all the time, so if someone is really bad off then one strategy is to make it so that they are the ones that hate you, since they are the least threat.

Another strategy is not to fuss about the RCI and to get them into the federation anyhow (or keep them in there), and use allies and your own power to keep them safe.  Someone with an economy that is terrible isn't necessarily someone that is going to die, or even something you have to do something about for sure.  It may slow down their ship production or some other aspect of the simulation that is particularly relevant, but that can be compensated for in a variety of ways that have nothing to do with RCI, and which gain you more benefits for your solar-map-relative-time.  Aka, doing things like tech research instead to help them (which you can then give to other races), or as noted simply continuing to pursue other things and then coming to their defense whenever they get attacked by too many armadas, etc.

I know that's pretty general advice, but hopefully that helps. :)

question -

would Tool tips on possible responses to things happening in the game help?

right now,  i spend a lot of time trying to figure out what to do in a situation. moving from planet to planet and race to race trying different things, mostly positive, not so much negative yet in my games.

would something like -

"there are 61 possible beneficial responses to this event"... or
"there are 102 possible hostile acts that can be used for this event."... or
"there are 32 techs that can be researched that can address this event positively as well as an additional 42 that will impact this event negatively... or
"In addition declaring war on the recipient of this event could lead to uniting the other remaining races into a closer coalition moving them towards forming a federation."... or
"removing this race will put two additional races at risk..."

would  'general notices summarizing possible responses' be helpful? Or just duplicate what is already in the planet menus?

the new version is very nice about my  being able to change the rci values, which is very nice!
it is a slow process but i think i am slowly figuring out what to do.  :)

really a lot of nice changes in the new version (1025).

There are many plot twist in each game with the AI Federations and RCI events.
It's true that we can be powerless for some time but it feels great when we manage to pass trough this.

A wiki up to date will be a great vallue to help the people to understand the mechanisms of the game.

Welcome to the forums! You have very good questions that are pretty difficult to answer (both in this thread and the other one.)

I am happy to add information to the game's wiki as it is figured out. Several of us have write-access and have already been working on it:
http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=The_Last_Federation
However, it does not cover very much difficult strategy and many of the underlying mechanisms are not well understood by the players.
As we answer questions we can add more to the pages.

Yup, It's true that the mechanims will takes time to be well know by the players.
Each time I play the game I find utility to some informations that I've bypass previously. At the start I've never read the planetary informations for example (My brain was too busy to deal with all the other informations maybe  :P).
Nevertheless, the more I play it and learn about the depth of the game the more I love it.

The one RCI that seems to be truly destructive and almost impossible to undo seems to be public order right now.  If it drops too low, then everyone just dogpiles the race and they start getting huge numbers of smugglers.  You have to put in some serious effort just to keep them from collapsing or falling, but you can never really bring them back from the brink.
