The ancient races = Humans and A.I
« on: July 15, 2014, 09:38:38 pm »
So How about it?
If Humans don't appeared in this scifi games (Which they 99% always show up one way or another) why not make it interesting!?
How about this as a way to put his in

Hydras (like most races) started out as nothing more than tech-less creatures with nothing more than sticks and stones to use as weapons. Then a giant blast from space rained down a heavy of ship of manned by both computer and flesh. There were no survivors but over time the Hydras started to understand how the ships work and started building ships of there own. They explored the solar system but never even found a trace of ether the famed "Humans" or the supposed competitors the " A.I" The Hydras assumed that both Humans and the legendary A.I were both wiped out ( At least in the solar system). But though there journey they found other non-space fairing beings with some past contact with either man or A.I.

Now maybe there was going to be the spire and zeith and that other race name I can't remember but why not at least HINT this in the game to add some lore to the Game.

Once again one of my more " insane" ideas but anyway thanks for reading :)

The AI War alien races are making an appearance in Spectral Empire along with the TLF races, but both TLF and AI War otherwise take place in similar-ish time periods in different galaxies. SE is set far in the future from both.

I don't have humans in TLF or SE for two reasons. First, they are more challenging to draw. Second, I find them less interesting and a bit cliche. We know how humans work, there's nothing new to say there. The alien races instead get to manifest as both the completely-alien as well as aspects of our own nature, which I find a lot more interesting.

:)  I actually rather like that idea!  And adding to the Lore is always interesting.

The only problem that I have with dismissing humans as "vanilla" or "boring" is that it doesn't have to be so. Yeah, a lot of fantasy and sci-fi games like to play them as the everyman, middle-of-the-road, jack of all trades, master of none kind of species, but that doesn't have to be the rule, just like all elves don't have to resemble Tolkien's elves.

I mean, games like Starcraft and Sins of a Solar Empire and even Warhammer 40k tend to portray humans with the same "gritty", almost "space-trucker" kind of theme. But you could change that, heck, it's your story. Have humanity develop in some interesting way, give them an artstyle that you yourself find interesting. You don't have to go with the usual grey, gritty, inelegant look that pervades so many human races in fiction. Even in reality, our current spacecraft don't look like that--they're closer to the Eldar than the Imperial Guard, at any rate.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Honestly, I don't see why humans would have to be in every game <_< More games need less human :P

Humans are so mainstream.
They are everywhere and it's refreshing to have a game without them.

The heavy representation humans get in media might have something to do with their relatability.  8)

I'd really like a simply realistic depiction of humans in space. Not FOR THE EMPEROR, SPACE CATHOLICS, SPACE COWBOYS, SPACE CAPITALISTS, SPACE EVERYMEN, SUPER DIPLOMATS, SUPER DEMOCRATS, MOST POWERFUL SPECIES, WEAKEST SPECIES, MOST HEADSTRONG SPECIES or some other superlative...more like politically divided but mostly (NOT purely) liberal democratic, economically focussed on luxury products, with plenty of idealism but also with more pragmatic elements usually ending up in positions of actual power...you know. Complex stuff. Not just a homogenous species all wearing one hat with a two-word description on top.

But I guess that's asking too much; since the other species would have to be equally complex...which probably distracts from more important gameplay elements. So it's probably more efficient to just take single-biome planets and single-aspect species and make it a game :P

I'd really like some heterogeneous alien races and diverse planets. Humans don't use a single language with a single unifying culture, why should aliens? And no planet capable of supporting sapient species would ever have a single massive ecosystem across its whole surface. Perhaps not quite as diverse as Earth, but no "jungle planets," etc.

[I know that your first phrase references WH40K, but the humans there are actually quite diverse. The Astartes are pretty homogeneous, but even they are different on a chapter basis. Look at the Rogue Traders, the ordos and sub-ordos of the inquisition, and the huge number of regiments of the Imperial Guard and you find a great deal of different ideologies, philosophies, and such. Only thing that unites them all is the Emperor-worship, but even that has different faces.]
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

I was actually thinking of Endless Space, but the phrase itself was obviously taken from W40k. About which your're probably right, I've only ever read a single 40k book.
