Please help us come up with ship names. In this game, the ships will all have randomized names, and I'd love your help coming up with some. Ideally, they will be one word (maybe two short ones rarely). That are befitting a weapon of the navy. :) We can't have anything that is copyrighted though. As some examples, this is what I have so far:
Triumph
Ascendancy
Surmounting
Vanquishment
Conquest
Victory
Upper Hand
Avenger
Defender
Effective
Grapple
Spearhead
Tempest
Hurricane
Tornado
Typhoon
Monsoon
Deluge
Cloudburst

Is there a web page for cliché starship names, or where else are you all getting your ideas from? I don't mean to offend anyone, but I'm pretty sure I've seen practically every single one of these names used in Sci-Fi already.
And what is it with the Typhoons? Typhoons everywhere! Can anyone make a Sci-Fi game without naming some craft or missile "Typhoon"?
-

Ok, we'll call it "Typhoid" instead.
Would "Dysentery" work better as the name of a ship or a missile?

I think people are taking their lead from the tone of the names in the original post, which are a little bit generic but very Navy. Personally I would prefer more original or even quirky names.
My quick picks are (usually one from each list): Cloudburst, Adamant, Moonjumper, Scorcher, Indefatigable, Xeno Wasp, Buzzard, Corsair, Horsehead, Archwarden, Kettledrum(one of mine) ... actually I'd rather not go through them all at the moment, but basically I'm favouring the less generic names.
Note from a friend:
Instead of "Surmounting"
have "Insurmountable"
Here's another one: Iron Princess.
-

Would "Dysentery" work better as the name of a ship or a missile?
That would be both more original and more intimidating.

I actually did find a list, but amusingly it's actually got some neat stuff.

Unique names are interesting and I'd certainly like to see some in the game, but I think the cliché navy names are quite good at setting a certain feeling/mood. That may be what Arcen is going for judging from the first post.
They're fun in their own way.
-
If you want some less "traditional" names then I can do that too. Some more serious than others :P

You should do two word ship names that randomly picks an adjective and a noun for ship names! That would be cool and lead to potentially amusing results.

I love this idea.
-
Ooh, like bosses and NPCs in AVWW. That would be neat, yeah.
-
Gratuitous Space Battles did that, or something similar at any rate, and I always thought it was really dumb. No one names ships like that. We always name them with single names.
And to add to the list we need every single common and many uncommon female names.
-
Nah, GSB just had a list of names for each faction. Federation had weird names like "Once More Unto the Breach" and so on, while Rebels had traditional "Inimitable", "Devastator" and the like. Empire had Roman-esque stuff, blah blah blah.

Also, since I feel like alien species should have something alien about their culture---how about borrowing chemistry terms, such as USS Stearic or HMS Ferrocene? They often have the sort of Latin/Greekish mellifluousness that makes them sound like the name of something important, but to the extent people recognize them they also imply really weird alien values that led to their naming ships after fragments of chemical compounds.
E.g.:
Azide
Telluride
Tribromide
Ketene
Stearic
Cysteine
Ferrocene
(Taken from < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictionary_of_chemical_formulas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictionary_of_chemical_formulas) >)
-
How about the "Arcenaut"?
-
How about the "Arcenaut"?
I absolutely love that one :D.

If you're still looking for some of these, might I point you to the USN's naval vessel registry: http://www.nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/NAME.HTM
Or Wikipedia's list of Royal Navy ship names: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ship_names_of_the_Royal_Navy
(Both of these are very long lists, but they're alphabetized and sorted into subpages).
Others:
Icarus
Daedalus
St Elmo's Fire
Lord Fisher
Hornblower
Aubrey
Churchill
Witch of Endor
Spectre
Wraith
Iron Fist
Adrianapolis
-
I've expanded my own ship naming script a bit (everyone has one these days, it seems), and here's some of the more "classical" names it can assign.
Category: Warlords:
Marquis Hernan Cortes Monroy Pizarro Altamirano
General Subutai
Iorg von Frundsberg
William Tecumseh Sherman
Generalissimo Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein
King Sargon of Akkad
Nathan Bedford Forrest
Count Johann Tserclaes von Tilly
Category: Battles:
Sarmizegetusa
Gaugamela
Issos
Nordlingen
Cannae
Poltava
Leningrad
Sekigahara
Some of them might be too long, I grant.
-
Do you need any more ship names?

It can never hurt.
-
Gratuitous Space Battles did that, or something similar at any rate, and I always thought it was really dumb. No one names ships like that. We always name them with single names.
Yeah, sometimes those can generate some really.... stupid sounding things.
On the other hand... sometimes it can come out like how it often does in Starbound so far. Some of the weapon names in that can be dumb, but then you also get weapons like the "Screaming Crunch-Squisher" or "Badass DudeStabber", which are my 2 favorite finds so far.
If those arent good examples of why this type of naming is great, then I dunno what is.
Also, someone suggested "AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH" as a ship name earlier in the thread. I support this name choice as well. I use that name for game saves sometimes.
-
We can't have anything that is copyrighted though.
You can't copyright a name, really... :)
Enterprise
Liberator
Serenity
Challenger (wait, that's two space shuttles in one never mind)

Can't go wrong with self-referential mythology:
DoomBot, FireEsper, TriangleShip, Neutered Gate, SpaceWhip, Mark V, Journey to Perfection, (which sounds like a luxury liner, honestly).
Typhon's Peak, Hellwroth Eclipse, Flawless Nether, Bathymetrous (a reversal of previous titles)
And of course, scathing irony:
Beautiful Interface, Volumous Humour, Miracle Font and ElvenBoot
-
Carrion- A kind of fast attacke that deals progressive damage to targets.
Kali- As the name implies, this unit would possibly sacrifice allies (or enimies, maybe) to deal extra damage.
Yami- Yami means "Dark" in Japenese, so it could blind opponents, disrupting their movement, or even having them target allies?
Azathoth- The Old God at the center of the universe, could be a fleet capital ship, big guns, or make units it kills into AI War style "zombie units that attack with impunity.
Surt- Norse fire god, could use AOE attacks, dealing burn damage along with them.
A few names and concepts to fit them, after seeing this up a few weeks after buying AI War, I am very interested to see how and where this title goes.
