Attack without war, is it a bug?
« on: August 07, 2014, 07:16:47 am »
I'm new to TLF and this is my first game. I encountered something weird: the Burlusts declared war on the Acutian and took a planet from them. But then they attacked the Skylaxians without a war declaration. I've invested in both races and would like to stop the fighting. But I can't because there is no official war.
Is it a bug? If not, what is going on and what should I do?

Not sure how to reply to you Trivin, I am a newbie at the game, so my experience is rather severely limited. When I play and I find two of my allies at odds, I side with one and take the loss of influence or good relations from the other.

Then I try to see what I can do to 'up' the good relations again, like a mission or giving a ability or something like that.

It becomes a sort of roller coaster for me, losing influence here and winning there, then losing where I won and winning again where I lost. :)  It takes a while and is sort of like a slow dance to get relations as high as I can across the board.

But it doesn't always work out good for me. And sometimes I have to try to sacrifice one to boost the other, and losing an ally in the process.

Mid to late gate has been a killer for me usually as one of the 'Empires' forms and I wind up losing the game, so I am not sure my suggestions on strategy will be good overall for you. But if you can do the balancing thing, and not have to lose one permanently you might be in a better position when the 'Empire' forms and have a better chance at winning the game.

At least I hope you will, take care,
-Teal

Welcome to the forums!

More often than not these are skirmisher fleets - which may attack other races without a declaration of war.
Especially the Burlusts are fairly big skirmishers iirc :).

Mousing over the respective armadas should give you the necessary information (potentially after enabling armada tooltips using the corresponding toggle).

This happened to me, too, and I also think it's a bug. The Burlusts sent a single armada to the Skylaxians even though their relations were 300+. Mousing over this armada with all the various options on tells me nothing about raiding. Not only could I not broker a peace, I couldn't do the normal "attack the invaders" or any other defense missions at the Skylaxian planet -- I could easily have defeated the invasion myself and would very willingly have taken the influence hit with the Burlusts, but the game just wouldn't let me. The attack simply didn't exist anywhere on any planet screen.

They proceeded to capture the planet (without defeating the orbiting army -- are they really supposed to be able to land invaders while there's a fleet there?) and basically ended any realistic chance of victory. I was having a good amount of fun up to this point, but this is a game-ruining experience. If I did something wrong here, the game should at least let me know *why* this attack was happening and why I couldn't do anything about it.

Does the new changes fix this for you?

Thanks for the quick response!

As for whether the update helped ... "kind of". When I loaded my save from where this was a problem, the Burlusts' armada immediately left the Skylaxian planet (yay!). However, their ground forces remained and captured the planet with no space support.

I... uhh ... probably am going to have to find an older save from before they landed any forces.  :-[

Yea, I don't think any force in the galaxy can stop a Burlust Bar Fight once it's begun.
