Anybody up for a succession game starting today?
« on: April 13, 2014, 11:48:57 am »
One of the best ongoing community events in all of gaming are the dwarf fortress succession/community games.
On that note, is anybody interested in trying a succession style game of The Last Federation? Thematically, we would be the various different heads of the Hydral taking turns being in charge  ;)

This is how I picture it:

Generate a new solar system, then we take turns playing one solar year at a time and narrate/illustrate with screenshots our journey before passing it on to the next person. We could probably run through turns pretty quickly since one solar year does not take that long to play.

My main goal for a first AAR would be to showcase gameplay and mechanics for new players from a variety of different styles and perspectives.

So, does anyone else have free time today or in the next few days and want to sign up for a turn? If we get enough interest, I will get started on my turn and write up and move over to the AAR sub forum.

I am also open to any suggestions on how best to run this. This has the added benefit that it would advance a save farther in the game than most of the alpha players have been so far, and it would be available for anyone to try out.

While I think a succession game could be cool, I also think it might be wise to wait until release version.

I'm not sure, maybe Chris will voice his opinion on this.

I would think that the game is near enough to complete that having some gameplay descriptions out there is way more helpful than hurtful at this point since release is less than a week away.

I don't see any problem with it.  It's possible you'll run into problems where it doesn't feel right, but if so we'd rather know about them than not know about them :)

One year seems fairly short. How long of game run time does that translate to?

Depends on number of despatches the player takes on.

I think that 1 day of sim time = 1 second of real time. So 1 year is a little over 13 minutes (400 seconds) if you just let it run.

But if you are doing a lot of battles, then you might take a few minutes of real time which only account for a couple days of sim time. If you do a lot of dispatches, then your turn will go really quickly.

My idea would be to have fast turns, and we can let whoever claims the save first play the next turn. That way the game will advance quickly.

I am finding plenty to talk about from just a few minutes of play, so I think 1 year can work (at least for a first try at a game).

I absolutely love the idea of succession games, and think that it's fine to start them now.  A handy guide is that 9 years is 1 hour of relative solar map time.  So that doesn't include battles at all, or time you spend paused, but it does include everything that flies by while you are in a dispatch mission or when you have a few months blip by after a combat, etc (so in a sense, combat does actually feed back into the solar map's timing, just not remotely realtime).

My suggestion would be 9-year stints, because major things change on roughly 9-year increments.

Round decades might be the simplest increment, then.

I'm not sure, the playing and write up are taking a while. I might not even make it to a year at this rate  :P

Intro and first post are up over on the AAR forums. I will do a little more playing and another post and then pass it on to whoever gets to it first.

Yeah, I know those things can be super time consuming.  Often just hitting highlights can be good, but I think for the early posts it helps to be more into the details, I guess.  Going blow by blow for hours of gametime definitely would be too much, though!

I've posted an announcement about the succession thread that shows up on the main steam store page, so the more people that jump on this thing, the better. ;)  I figure it's a good way to help introduce potential buyers to the fact that there is a community here, and to the idea of succession games in general: http://steamcommunity.com/games/273070/announcements/

The save is available as of now. I finished 1 year. Someone hop over to the AAR forum and claim it and get started!  :D
