Xbox 360 Controller not recognized on MacOs

I just purchased this game and I cannot for the life of me seem to get it to acknowledge my controller. Are there any other mac users who have experienced this? Any known solutions? I tried searching this forum and the steam discussions but didn't find any info. I'm running a macbook pro on OS X 10.10, for what it's worth.
