Oh god.
Pieces.
You can blow them to pieces.
And they break apart.
<3
There's another game out there that has a similar model, blanking on the name. Somebody will recognize it though, here's one of the cooler things I did:
The rotation effect is actually an illusion. You can't make a piece change z-depth. ;)
The only problem with that particular game was that any given piece could only have 1 parent. And if that parent got distroyed all of its children were immediately disconnected. So large ships had structural flaws you could exploit to instant-kill them. So for like this monstrosity (http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~mmj29/temp/Barge.png), those spine-pieces are all parent-child from the front of the ship to the back. And there's only or or two pieces between them and the exterior, but if you break the spine, the entire back half of the ship falls away and taking with it 90% its firepower. Then you can just attack the back-end of what's left and ignore all the armor sections making up the prow (every single one of those small triangles on the front is a separate piece, one of which normally made up an entire WING of a regular sized unit, yeah, that barge is HUGE).
Oh yeah, and this one (http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~mmj29/temp/EtchSketch.gif) where I make it look like one piece isn't moving, because it's actually moving against its own parent's movement, to give the illusion that it's one thing (the spinner) has two parents. I forget if its the horizontal bar or the vertical one that's the child of the other...

Looks like Battleships Forever, Draco.

Ah, yes, that's exactly what it is. I did those back in 2009 and haven't really touched it since. I've just had the images floating around on my webspace because they were too cool to delete.

Cool stuff!

Where does Captain Forever fit into the naming conspiracy?

Those concept art pieces look fantastic! Yet more Arcen goodness to look forward to!

I know you mentioned it will be more open than other shmups, but will the game be beatable in the traditional sense? Also, any ideas for the scoring system?

For comparison, the Forever in the BF name is a reference to Warning Forever, a shmup that procedurally generates bosses and evolves them depending on what worked and what didn't in the previous bosses you fought. There's also a clone of WF out there called Infinity Danger, I don't think it's as good as the original tho.

This could be really fun!

That.

will this game be using any prelisted races/lore or is this completely fresh in that regard?.

[Obscura] don't feel right for SBR to me, but they might actually fit well as one of the primary antagonists in Life at the End of the Universe, now that you mention it. Huh. I hadn't thought of that until now. That's actually really interesting!
