Title: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)
Post by: x4000 on January 22, 2016, 12:58:39 AM
The coming soon page, anyhow, as well as the trading cards. :)

http://store.steampowered.com//app/410820

The trailer is looking awesome from a near-final cut, but it's not done just yet.  That's the last piece of the puzzle for both Steam and Humble.  Other than that, we're all set with both!

Like the title mentions, if you play the game and have things you want to tell other players, please do so.  There's a lot of enthusiasm in here, but this game is known to like nobody outside of these forums for the most part, so having some impressions from you guys, as well as any tips or whatever that you wish to pass along, is helpful.

FYI, looks like the game can't be reviewed until it's released.

Ah, fair enough.  It will let ME review it, but I'm not the sort to put those "10/10 would develop again" type reviews.  Funny system.

I can totally see a creepy guy at the photo shop saying that after giving you back your 35mm shots.

Just a question, can you actually mod/desin new mechs with the modding language?

 ;D

Just a question, can you actually mod/desin new mechs with the modding language?

Yes.  The simplest way I can answer this is: every item, enemy, powerup, mech, bullet pattern, particle effect, sound effect, and anything else you interact with is all designed using a really robust xml scripting system.  It's all easy to see and tweak at will, and so on.  What is done in C# is the actual logic behind the huge amounts of xml tags and scripting you can use.

I'm not sure it's possible to make something easier to mod -- we even have it so that your files don't get overwritten by ours, since you can make your own files with things you add for yourself: https://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Starward_Rogue:Main#XML_Documentation

One downside right now: only six slots for mechs, and all are taken.  So it will pull whatever the first six are that it finds.  Later I want to have it so that we can have any number of mechs... but I couldn't think of an intuitive interface that works well with the gamepad and the mouse right yet.

Cool, then I will make the Yellow Mech that you guys totally forgot to make. I just have to fill the gap that is called "knowledge of modding".

You need to pick some better screenshots. I think two or three of those screenshots are really good, but the rest are focusing too much on menus or cleared rooms. I admit I don't know much about this gaming community for these games, but don't you want to show your awesome bullet patterns, bosses, and perilous situations?
Title: Re: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)
Post by: Castruccio on January 22, 2016, 03:46:35 AM
I agree.  More boss bullet patterns.  That is what makes the game distinctive.
Title: Re: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)
Post by: KingIsaacLinksr on January 22, 2016, 05:38:39 AM
Yea, reviews can't be posted for a game that hasn't come out yet.

Also, would probably improve the screenshots to be more colorful boss fights. Or even rooms that have some insane amount of enemies. Something to really catch the eye. Not sure I would put menu screens up or at the least would bury them towards the end of the list. Just my thoughts anyway.

Hmm.  If you guys don't mind submitting some screenshots in 1280x720 size, that would certainly be welcome if you don't like those.
Title: Re: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)
Post by: Misery on January 22, 2016, 07:06:19 AM
Okay, here's my thoughts on the screenshots and such:

1. Showing menus is fine, but dont do many like that, maybe just one or two is enough; some people do like to see what the interface is like but beyond that it makes for a boring presentation.

2. Sure, the bosses probably work

3. When showing rooms, show them full of STUFF.  Like, that room with the spider has... the spider, but not much else.  The entire area to the left is blank.   One thing that I think stands out with this game is the variety of stuff in the rooms, so showing some complicated room layouts would be good.  All them regen blocks and lasers and arrow things and whatever....

4. Definitely take down that Wallmaster one.  It looks like there's no boss in it.

5. You've got miniboss things and a shop in there, that's good... hmm.... some other "special rooms" might be good too, though I'm blanking out on just what (I only just got up, still out of it).

1280x720.  It makes it hard to show too much in one screen.  Anyway, any help is welcome.  I'm bogged down in other stuff right now, and need to get some sleep in a minute anyway.

Does the resolution change how much can be seen?  It looks *exactly* like my own view.

But I'll see if I cant get some shots myself as I do stuff with it tonight.
Title: Re: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)
Post by: x4000 on January 22, 2016, 07:30:32 AM
The resolution does indeed change how much can be seen, unless you turn screen scaling on.
Title: Re: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)
Post by: Misery on January 22, 2016, 07:57:28 AM
....huh.

I thought this was how it looked for everyone.  Interesting.

Well I aint changing it on my end, that's for sure, it'd confuse me too much.   Gotten used to it!  I dunno, everything seems the right size to me.  Some of those bullets would be harder to make out (in terms of relative position to my mech) at a higher resolution.  Or that's just me, maybe.

When does Humble get the game, and do you plan on offering it through GOG?
Title: Re: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)

I just want to add something important here:

If you get the game and put up a review quickly, be sure to state at the top of the review that your displayed hours does NOT match the actual number of hours you've played because you were playing the beta/alpha/whatever.

Otherwise, people will either think you ignore it, or think you might be with the devs and are just putting up a review because you were asked to.

Noticed that all the pictures include placeholder mech art. Might be better to replace them with some new ones.

When does Humble get the game, and do you plan on offering it through GOG?
Chris already explained that gog declined the game here: https://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,18352.msg197061.html#msg197061

Hey Chris, is the game supposed to be 10% off or 25% off? Because Humble and Steam seem to be...inconsistent.
Title: Re: Steam page is up! (If you have something to say after playing, PLEASE review!)
Post by: x4000 on January 22, 2016, 06:55:55 PM
It's the same amount off on both: 10%.

However, on both stores, if you own an existing copy of one of our games, then you get a loyalty coupon over the next little while that offers you an additional 15% off.  Since you're logged in, you see the 25% on steam.  On humble it applies it at checkout, I believe.  Or they email it to you.  I'm honestly not sure; the systems are both new to us in terms of that sort of coupon.  But if you look at steam in incognito mode, or logged out, you'll see just a regular old 10%.

Yes, definitely disclose your involvement and how you got the game. You'll get a lot more credibility if you're honest up front rather than people wondering whether you were paid off.

There's actually a second reason to go after health shards, I'll just point out.

However I wont point out what it is.  That'd be spoilin' indeed.

Speaking of reviewing....

Normally, I try to always leave one.

But... should I not do that this time since I was involved in development?  That typically seems frowned upon.... even if the individual is being absolutely honest about everything in the review.

But I'll do one if it's actually a good idea to.

It's probably for the best if you don't. Actually making parts of the game means your review is not worth anything to anyone, even if it is honest.

yeap you (as far as I know be mistaken on this) aren't getting any monetary value out of this(which is why its frowned upon in the first place) so I think it'll be fine so long you put a heavy disclaimer on that part in fact it'll probably mean that readers will more willing to take what you say to heart so go ahead and do it.

Yea, if you're going to benefit from the game doing well, I would not review it. For people like us who tested the game, it's not a big deal because we don't see those residuals *wink wink nudge nudge*. So yea, if you actively developed and changed the game, wouldn't post a public review.

Yea, then no, wouldn't. There's a major conflict of interest in doing a public review while being/had been a paid employee of the game/media you worked on. Doing a Steam review that's restricted to friends though would probably be fine.

I really am slightly annoyed at this new trend. With disclosure, I don't see a big problem at all. Look at movie actors, they get paid to make the movies, and then they get paid to promote the movie, even if it is rubbish. I don't see anyone burning down their houses.

Promoting a movie does not equal reviewing a videogame/media. They are spreading word of mouth about a film. Reviewers are giving their more-or-less unbiased opinion about whether a game is worth getting.

that's true if your watching a promotion you know its dishonest and is trying to sell things to you reviews are meant to help people make decisions and its not like its particular difficult to do there isn't a single reason not to disclaime these things.

I looked through the achievements just now, cool to see those up, mostly what I expected.  Be interesting to see how many accomplish each one.

"Perfect Clear: Terminus",  that one is going to give even me trouble.  %(#&-ing Palisade.  It's like the Obscura Disc from TLF:  I made it, it thanks me by thwarting me and driving me nuts.

Also going to be interesting to see how many people beat the game with the Redshift.   I still need to try a run with it myself.  I've only barely touched it.

Actually I feel like I"ve only barely touched half the freaking game.  I dont even want to know how much time I've spent in the testing chamber.

Here's the thing though: A positive review on Steam directly benefits the game. (Through a whole list of reasons). Misery putting a positive review on Steam/Other Review Sites means the game will do better because of it. Hence more money. Promotion doesn't affect a game's placing on Steam. (Though it kinda does but it's not as direct). This gets into a really complex conversation on ethics that I'm not particularly wanting to get into in this thread. But suffice it to say, it's considered bad form for a developer of a product to positively review the thing they worked on.

eh? I never said it didn't just that promotion is deliberate advertising while reviews are just meant to be there to be helpful to people the fact that they affect sales is usually accidental. (bottom line is misery that no you shouldn't make a review for this game)

a slightly random question I thought id ask here since its to do with the trailer how come the reason for everything your doing isn't mentioned in the game it self?.(okay It might in the intro but I don't really get it any more since I've been using the same save for a while)

We could actually do with some screenshots being added by users so they're visible on the steam community page, I think, too.

I'm seeing it on sale on Steam for 25% off.

It's because I have so many other Arcen Titles. Thanks Misery. I missed that.

I'm seeing it on sale on Steam for 25% off.

From earlier in the thread:
It's the same amount off on both: 10%.

However, on both stores, if you own an existing copy of one of our games, then you get a loyalty coupon over the next little while that offers you an additional 15% off.  Since you're logged in, you see the 25% on steam.  On humble it applies it at checkout, I believe.  Or they email it to you.  I'm honestly not sure; the systems are both new to us in terms of that sort of coupon.  But if you look at steam in incognito mode, or logged out, you'll see just a regular old 10%.

Put up a review under Matster username with a few gameplay videos. I hope that is ok.

Edit: One question. When is the humblestore going to be updated with a drm-free build?

It's not too surprising that it's starting out slow. However, as tired as you guys are, I recommend putting in a lot of marketing time. Due to the east coast storm, many people will be at home for the next couple of days.

Well, we're at 70 reviews on Steam, and *all* of them are positive.

This just absolutely blows my mind, it really does.

No idea, sorry. But my impression from Chris' earlier statements was that overall sales are still low but slowly picking up speed.

Just my interpretation of course.

We're up to 120 reviews.

Only one is negative, and it is the absolutely inevitable "Graphics and music arent good" (???) sort that always appears at least once no matter how good the game looks/sounds (seriously, I dont see the problem with either here; looks and sounds darned good to me).

So that's 119 positive (usually very positive) out of 120.

Honestly I'm still just stunned by this.

A big thanks to all that have reviewed the game!

Up to 149 positive, 1 negative! I never thought that the reception to the game would be this good. Watch out Portal 2, we're coming for the top spot, heh!

you never with the over whelming amount of positivity form the people who have actually played it might just get there. (not to portal obviously comparing anything sales wise to portal is a waste since its been out for years and has valve behind it who are made of money)

There is actually a slim outside of chance of the game cracking the top 25 steam games of all time list. If the game were to keep it's current 99% rating after 500 reviews (I think) then that should put us somewhere in the top 25. Probably not very realistic, heh, but you never know. A more realistic target would be to get into the Overwhelmingly Positive tier which I think is a 95% or more rating after 500 reviews. I would be quite disappointed if we didn't eventually break into this tier, given how great a start we've made. This would be Arcen's first game to achieve Overwhelmingly Positive status, which should probably be good for long-term sales -- you'd think, t least!

Would need some luck for that though.

I'm surprised we havent gotten at least a few more negative reviews simply because the game doesnt use 3D hyper HDR bloom omega bump-mapped XP graphics or whatever damn terms they're using now.  And there's no cutscenes, oh noes!  *I* am thankful for that bit, but too many people out there get bothered by it.

Hmm. Steam won't let me put any review up, I just get getting a 403 Forbidden error, regardless of browser  :-\

Just going to pop it here so I remember to copy/paste it in to a review later.

Starward Rogue has a 100% 'true rank' on Steam Spy, and a 99% user review score; it's well deserved. I'm tired of rogue-lites, and I don't play shmups very often at all. I am absolutely not the target audience of this game. But it is superb, best of breed, and has kept me hooked.

The variety of enemies is excellent, inspired by both the very best of bullet hell gameplay and lots of creative enemy types that provide stimulating challenges. The tutorial is good, the difficulty is very adjustable, and the different suit designs allow the player to chose totally different styles of play. The rogue-lite aspects provide you with a sufficiently unique experience each time, and are balanced to offer a consistently entertaining difficulty curve as well.

The game's length is such that if you have a bad run it isn't a waste of time, but if you're having a good time you get a really good stint of it, and it's very replayable. The graphics are solid, functional and vibrant. The music is, as typical for Arcen games, fairly non-standard but of a high quality. Ultimately, though, Starmade Rogue stands out for its excellent gameplay.

My complaints are very minor. The plot is a bit bare-thread; it would be nice to have more context given the rather odd situation you're in (not that in matters to the game any), and the false ending is somewhat unsatisfying. These are nitpicks that won't damage your enjoyment of the game. This is a solid purchase for anyone and if you only ever buy one shmup or rogue-lite, this would be a good choice.

BTW. I do recommend experimenting with the game's options. There a versatile set of options in there like the momentum setting which may enhance your enjoyment of the game.

You should try putting it up again. Steam had another of its service not available moments yesterday which is becoming very common with them in the last time.

I had the same problem when I was posting my review. Try submitting the first paragraph, then edit the review and add the rest of it. That fixed it for me. Submitting longer reviews directly doesn't always work, for some reason.

Just an idea.
Since Starward rogue does not support Steam workshop 8hopefully only at the moment), you could at least make a modding subforum on Steam, where players share their creations. A lot of Steam players are unaware of the Arcen forum.

I'll be picking it up when I get home from work later today, I grab every Arcen game when they are out (focus on AI War though of course)!

Looks like the Steam reviews are really positive too, that's good to see.
