eBay also has retro items, or lots of items that you can't get elsewhere.

I was able to get a big bunch of nothing but bridge supports for GeoTrax, for like $10.  I got a metric ton of basic lego bricks for something like $10 per group.  Yay incredible building freedom.  I got some Omagles that have not been manufactured since the 80s (though I also got some from Holland that were somehow new -- kinda confusing on that, but they are awesome).

Amazon has everything that's prepackaged and actually a unit for sale.  On eBay I got a very nice Mac laptop back in 2010, that was (I knew this going in) missing I think the letter Z, or the Ctrl key, or something like that.  I then was able to order that exact single key for $5 from someone who was just selling individual keys for mac laptops for anyone who needed them.

So I dunno, there are definitely some perfectly-legal areas where eBay is the right place to go.  But it gets niche suuuuper fast. ;)

This is sorta like a focused-ish (emphasis on the ish at this point) version of that one gigantothread I pointed out here before on bay12. Just kinda wanders from one subject to the other and occasionally picks topics back up.

Amazon has everything, at least everything that's legal.

EBay covers the gaps.

I was able to buy a game system that new costed one hundred dollars for 38 dollars. I then bought a cartage that could hold ROM's for 20 dollars. I doubt I could do either from a US business.
I also got headphones for 48 dollars. In a store it would cost 110 dollars, at Amazon it would cost 88 dollars. Everyone else on ebay was selling it for 70 - 80 dollars, but this lone headphone was 48 dollars. How is it so cheap? I'd rather not dig deeper into that.
Ebay is not for the scrupulous at heart.

Ah! I just got a jewerly set of 12 for three dollars. It probably has internal lead so I shouldn't eat it, but who needs safety at these prices!
Life is short. Have fun.

Board game related: Check out Roll for the Galaxy. New in 2015 I believe, has an expansion as well. Sci-fi empire builder with lots of dice.

I love Race for the Galaxy, but have mixed feelings about Roll for the Galaxy. I need to play it a few more times. My wife loves Race but loathes Roll. She did have to play Race about 20 times before she got it though. She has only played Roll three times now.

The Fury of Dracula 2nd Edition - The 3rd Edition was released recently, but I haven't played it. tFoD is an amazing game of stealth and deduction. One player takes the role of Dracula skulking through Europe trying to raise his vampire horde, the others take on the roles of Vampire Hunters. During the day Dracula is very weak, at night his is a dominant force. His movement is restricted to certain paths (i.e., roads and specific shipping lanes) but is hidden from the Hunters. He places his current and past locations on the board as facedown cards, leaving a trail that the Hunters can discover and follow. A tension filled game of cat and mouse as the Hunter try to piece together enough information to track Dracula down, while remaining at a same distance during the night. It plays in 90 minutes for 2-5 players, best with 3 or 4.

I played the 3rd edition not that long ago.  Much recommend.

Net Runner - The next development of MtG-like games (players familiar with the genre will find this funny). A 2 player LCG deck building game with a cyber-punk theme. There are no random expansion packs to buy, you know exactly what cards are in every set. Design your deck to go head to head with your opponent as either the plucky adventuring Runner or the massive Corporate Corporation.

Just going to say that a Xanatos Gambit deck exists.

My kids and I have been having a blast with King of New York.

I can also recommend Roll for the Galaxy.  I haven't played Race yet, but it's on the list when we get bored with these two and Pandemic.

re: Fury of Dracula v2 versus v3
What did you think of the differences between them?

re: kids
You might try Animal Upon Animal. Its a super cute little game that kids really like, you can also trick nongamers into playing it because the pieces are so cute.

re:King of New York
Have they released the special abilities deck yet? King of Tokyo/New York base games were a little too light for me, but the ability decks helped that out.

I don't know, but I feel the same way.  I've played New York without and Tokyo with.

I've only played v3, so no comment.
I can, however, compare it to Scotland Yard and Letters to Whitechapel.  (Scotland Yard is just terrible, whereas Letters and Fury are very different games: Fury has a lot of levers you can pull on to adjust the difficulty, Letters doesn't: Jack needs to play a near optimal game to win).

re:Fury v2 vs v3
I've only read the changes and read some comments about them. They were quite extensive and really make the game different. I can't tell if I like them or not.

Re:Scottland Yard.
Scottland Yard is so good. But you have to play with 4 or 5 detectives (I forget which), regardless of the number of human players.

re:Letters to White Chapel
I missed out on the week this one was played.  I want to try it, but alas. I also want to try the Italian one.

re: 2 player brain explosion games
Mr. Jack and Lord of the Rings: Confrontation alternate between being awesome and completely rigged and unfair to me. I still don't know if I like/love/hate them. They are certainly worth experiencing.

My problem with Scotland Yard is that every movement ticket the cops use, Mr. X gets, meaning he gets an increased amount of freedom to move around the city and the cops get less as the game goes on.

re:Scotland yard cops lose mobility

I think that's part of what makes it good. If the cops don't have limited tickets, then there is no purpose in having tickets to begin with. It would also make it a lot harder for Mr. X because there are fewer constraints on Cop movement.  Additionally, the strategy for the cops is to create a net to continually constrain Mr. X's movement, and not to go all in and catch him in a rush. If there were infinite tickets then you'll see more degenerate state games where players use an all or nothing strategy. Right now, due to the scarcity of tickets (especially metros), the cops are less likely to go all in, because of how obvious it is that they will then be stuck if Mr. X escapes the rush. With infinite tickets, players will go all in, fail to catch Mr. X (or catch him immediately based upon luck), and then be frustrated that they then have to run around for the rest of the game chasing him without catching him. Right now, you get 1 or maybe 2 rushes at Mr. X, the outcome of which decides the game.

Yes, still waiting. Drm-free version is at least 2 months late.
I'm happy the dev does not need our money, but maybe his mates would..
