Hey!  Didn't think we forgot about Starward Rogue, did you?  There's been a ton of stuff going on with it, though we've not had a release since May.

I'm going to break this post into two parts: an "abstract," if you will, that is briefer and up here at the top.  And then an incredibly-long section below with all the details.  So when you see the length of this thing, feel free to stop reading after the abstract.  Here we go!

Starward Rogue -- Loco

Abstract

The TLDR is that this game is being included in the August Humble Monthly, and as a part of that they sponsored some awesome new content that is available for everybody -- if you already have the game, you're getting this content for free, too.

BUT we also have a bunch of other awesome updates that go along with this that are unrelated to Humble, but are just things-that-have-been-in-progress-since-May.  The difference in the feel of the game, to me, is nothing short of incredible.  And I feel like I can take this moment to brag a bit, since I've had nothing to do with the specific content, given I've been busy with In Case of Emergency, Release Raptor for my own work.

The end boss, Terminus, is now incredibly more epic, which is very exciting.  Balance work has been done all over the place, and the ending areas of the game are a lot harder.  There are dozens of new things of various sorts: enemies, items, weapons, etc, etc.

Both the consumable shops and the sacrifice shops have gotten huge updates to be more useful and filled with more goodies.  There's a new mech, bringing the total from 6 to 7.

There are also now teleporters that let you easily backtrack to key points that you've visited in the past on the current floor.  Saves a ton of time and streamlines exploration.  And lots, lots more.

Mech Select Screen

The Humble Mech

Description: Gets a 10% discount at all stores, and 20 credits starting spending money. Armed with the Contrishooter, a secondary weapon that is powered by your own generosity, and a missile launcher that converts enemies into credits on kill.

A bit of a game changing mechanic on this mech, due to it's secondary weapon that uses credits instead of energy.

Note from Chris: This is my own favorite mech now, I think.  It's definitely not overpowered, but it fits my playstyle really well.  I tend to be pretty frugal in the game, and having extra credits here actually encourages me to spend a bit more.

But even more than that, my frugality is rewarded a bit in that I can unleash a ton of hurt on bosses with the Contrishooter.  All of the existing mechs (there are 6 until now) are great and each fit a specific playstyle, but this is the first one that truly supports my own slightly-speedrunny-very-little-shopping playstyle.

"The Humbled": New Boss

This is a new multi phase boss that uses two sets of orbiting minions as its defense.

If you don't mind spoilers, here's a video of the Hard mode version of the Humble-themed boss.  The normal mode version is not so intense.

Bear in mind that this takes extra time in that video because Misery was playing with no upgrades whatsoever to his mech, so the boss feels extra tanky thanks to that. In actual gameplay where you've collected items and leveled up and whatnot it dies at a better rate.

Consumable Shop Overhaul

The consumable shop has always been something that most players wouldn't normally have thought worthy of using a keycard on, so we decided to put some extra love here; the shop has been overhauled, including changes to its structure as well as the addition of a lot of new content.

Firstly, there are two variants of this shop. The normal shop which the player will encounter on most of their runs, which features a few new Humble-themed items. Then, there is also a new special Humble Shop which appears more rarely, but has 7 slots for items -- instead of 3.

Other Updates!

These things don't have anything to do with Humble, but they are a part of the general 1.5 update of the game, so you'll find these brand-new things waiting for you as you launch the game, too. :)

Backtracking Teleporter Pads

A long desired feature. Backtracking teleporters! These allow for much faster movement around the floors in order to making backtracking much easier.  You'll see these in the corner of rooms.  They work rather like the Warp Whistle did in Zelda 1, except faster.

StarwardRogue -- New Sacrifice Items

Sacrifice Shop Overhaul

The sacrifice shop has had 13 new items added: Coupon Cutter, A Phasing Grace, Dead Eye Module, Explodifier, Grin And Bear It, Lorentz Factor, Magic Missile Box, Nanite Hull, Overcritical, Photoelectric, Skeleton Keycard, Scourge Spread, and the Blood Avenger. These items were created with help from the community.

This really makes a big difference, because on long runs the sacrifice shops could be getting empty on the lower floors.

Misery's Enemy and Room Balance Overhaul

Numerous adjustments have been made to the enemies, especially those late game. Floors 6 and 7 are a lot tougher now. As well as just adjustments, there are also new enemies to fight including Fragment, Diffusion, and many other new variants of existing enemies. Watch out for those Blue Facerippers!

Starward Rogue -- Sunder

New Weapons

A pack of 9 new main, energy, and missile launchers has been added: Plasma Shotgun, Warhog's Shotgun, Solar Flaregun, Stomper, Burstomatic, Interceptor Crossbow, Big Homing Missile Launcher, Homing Multi Mini Missile Launcher, and the Triple Squared Missile Launcher. Created in collaboration with community member Goldenwolf! Additionally, Spread Shot now added for real – it wasn't seeding in the previous patch.

New Boss and Miniboss stuff

Misery has added a new boss called Sunder, as well as completely overhauling Terminus (the super-final boss). It's now a crazy and epic fight worthy of being called the true final boss. New miniboss Loco has been added courtesy of Ptarth, plus a new Reaper variant, and a few improvements to the existing ones.

Improved Items

A few items have received some attention such as the Cryofreeze, Incineration, and the Sheltering Modules. Improvements for Limiter Removal, Phase Module, and many more.

Mech Selection

Now it's possible at add new mechs to the game without them overwriting the existing mechs. Now you can get a page scroll so that it's possible to add as many mechs as desired. Very useful for modders.

Whew!

And that's all that we can remember, at least. ;)  The release notes are freaking long, and they don't include anything from the Humble section.

This update is almost entirely brought to you by our awesome volunteers Misery, ptarth, Pepisolo, and Cinth.  They had some help from other community members in some cases, and Blue from our staff provided the art and Keith provided some coding, but they did all the heavy lifting.  I'm super impressed with their work.

The teleporters are soo great!
And the new missile launchers are soo controversial!
And the incredible change that came from the consumables!

If my apartment wasn't like an oven at the moment, I'm sure I could cry tears of joy. This update is everything I would have expected to see released for the game in the next year, all at once, and then some more. The volunteers are amazing! (Blue and Keith too)

And then there's this:

As a caveat, mostly likely, removing mechs from save files will still bjork your saves. Also I don't think there are protections built in for the Steam Achievement of winning with all 6 mechs.

About bloody time.... NOT telling anyone about this was beginning to bother me more than a little bit.  I dont know how Chris & everyone consistently manages to not spill the beans for lengthy periods of time without going crazy.

Though I'll admit I cheated and mentioned the teleporters in a few places.

Speaking of which, as far as I'm concerned, that's the absolute best part of the update.   Games like this tend to encourage alot of backtracking, particularly when you're the min-maxer sort of player like I am, but it can take FOREVER.  Even Isaac has this issue.  But this game had it real bad.  The teleporters COMPLETELY fix that.  Been wanting this feature in here since release. 


Also:  Consumables.  Cant stress enough how good these have gotten now.  And considering that, the actual consumables shop is well worth a key now, as is opening locked chests.  I've actually found myself frequently grabbing the Keymaster perks in order to have alot of keys for that very purpose.   If you really want to play as well as you can, make sure you're using consumables.  NOT using them is like ignoring pills & cards in Isaac.  Makes me want to throw something at whoever is playing.

The actual Humble Bundle consumable is really nice, too.   They can be PRICEY (there's multiple versions of it, with the biggest costing 90) but so far in my experience I get enough stuff (as in, actual items, not just pickups) to make it worth more than what's been paid.   You can also buy Mystery Circuits, both revealed and unrevealed, at these stores now.  Considering that some mystery circuits offer PERMANENT bonuses, it can be worth checking to see if you can find a revealed version of one of those.


And I'll just say that the new Terminus fight should be.... much harder now.   Particularly that last phase.   I've shown the fight before in a video on here, but... ended up upgrading the final phase to make it more appropriate for the game's very final attack.   Particularly on Hard, it's pretty freaking nasty.


There's probably still some tweaking and such to be done, but I'm pretty darn pleased with how this all turned out.  Any tweaks from me though will have to wait until Sunday or Monday.  Bloody laptop cant deal with the game.  Makes no sense.  It'll run Raptor just fine...  bah.  I'm going to keep complaining about that until a solution presents itself.

What actually happens when you use Energy-effect powerups on the Humble Mech? I've noticed they still spawn, but haven't tried to pick any of them up.

I'd hate to have a Big Leaky Credit Pool that drains 5 per second. :P Or is it just sort of like a shieldless Mech, in that while it has no Energy capacity to start with, it can be added(just in case you ever decide to pick up a different Secondary), and the Contrishooter will still completely ignore the presence of Energy in favor of its own Credit-based functions?

Found Loco on Floor 3, I believe. That's...pretty crazy.

Faced the normal version a few minutes ago... no spoilers for those that didn't see it yet, but wow! That's a pretty damn epic way to finish a run. Love what you did with the old bodyguards. Tomorrow I'll go challenge the Hard version.

As for those teleporters, it's amazing the time we can save now.

The Humble mech actually has a pretty good energy reserve (50), it's just the Contrishooter that uses an alternate ammo. So energy powerups should work normally on him.

The other thing doesn't technically have to be [redacted] unless you want it to be.  We're not under NDA with anyone over that thing.  But I can see the appeal I suppose of some secrecy at the moment. ;)

What, you mean the expansion?  Though that definitely got slowed down with the need to do all the balance stuff and this update.   Worth it, though.

I still need to finish a certain mode, too.  Ugh.  That one is a real pain.  Once I get the rest of the bosses done though the enemies wont take all that long.

Okay, so, I can fling huge fireballs around with the Incineration Module.  That's a thing that's happening.  Sure wasn't before....

Not a complaint, mind you.


EDIT:

Okay, so, a synergy that I call The Lawnmower:   That item that gives you a flame trail as you sprint, and the new sacrifice room item that makes you invincible for 10 seconds when you enter a room.

Enter a room, don't bother firing, and just kill as many things as you can simply by dashing around like a maniac.  This didn't stop being entertaining.


Talk about an OP run, that one.  Bought, what, 4 sacrifice items, still had 30+ max HP at the end?   Very different from my run prior to that, where the Random Number Gods were very angry indeed.

Also, Boomerang Needler is still a really good energy weapon.   That hasn't changed.


And did someone make a change to the "Miniature Black Hole" consumable?   I seem to recall that being very... ineffective before.  On this run I used it in a nasty room with like 4 fearsomes in it, and I'm relatively certain it ate the universe.  3 of those Fearsomes were dead after it faded, though I'm not entirely sure what killed them.

This is probably the first time I heard an update designed around a web store. Seriously this is both crazy and brilliant at the same time. I don't know if I should laugh or be amazed how well this works ingame.
The new mech is great however I feel he is to overpowered at the moment. His secondary weapon deals big amounts of damage but the thing is, I kill bosses before I even ran out of money. Maybe that's just my feeling.

Mabinogi is a typical MMORPg with typical MMORPG mechanics but this skill stands out. You basically throw your money at opponents. The more you throw, the more damage you do. You could spent up to 10.000 gold on a single attack and bankroutp yourself in no time. pretty much the most useless ability int he game but in the same time the best one if you wanted to max the luck stat.
Final Fantasy did also something similiar.

What i noticed with this update is that the varity increased dramatically. Right the first run after the update and I see tons of new stuff I have never seen before.

Haven't seen the new boss though, really wanted to see it throwing cash at me.
And for an additional laugh towards the new mech: "Shut up and take my money!"

I think there always is that feeling about this mech, pretty much because it does allow you to obliterate bosses; however this is at a long-term cost. If you do choose to obliterate the early bosses then this really damages your purchasing power, so that late game you may still be running with bad gear, and so you become very reliant on the Contrishooter. From that point on, you become more aware of your credit supply and have to be more conservative with your shots so that you can hit The Warden or Terminus with enough ammo to do the job. So, yeah, in terms of individual bosses you can certainly be OP, but in terms of the overall run, not so much, I'd say. Whether the Humble Mech is OP or not needs to be judged on the basis of whole runs rather than individual bosses due to how much the mech changes the flow of the game, if you know what I mean.

I believe I changed it during the consumable (partial) overhaul, but that was ages ago.

I see your point and I will test it more anyway. But keep also in mind, in terms of shops, buying new weapons would remove your cash weapon anyway. Only thing useful would be drones and consumables.

I actually am having this very same issue.... and I'm running the development version, which I updated 3 times, just in case.  So it's impossible for me to be missing anything here.

It sounds more like a display bug than anything else, but it IS rather annoying.  It glows and everything.  Hopefully that's all it is though.

Ack!  Yep, it was pretty much a display thing, for the most part.  All the important parts had downloaded, but the thing that increments the version number was not applied properly.  If you do one more update it should work fine now!

Loco was crazy, but I did actually beat it rather easily. It was just unexpectedly aggressive.

....unless the RNG turns out to be an absolute snot on a particular run and does that THING where you have the ability to unlock a bazillion things but it doesn't give you a bazillion things to unlock.   I hate when it does that.  Clearly it does it on purpose.

Or the THING where you have a bazillion things to unlock.  And only 2 keys.  In one entire floor.  During your entire run.

Haven't had access to a laptop for over a month and here I find out that so much epic new stuff has been released. Awesome! I was planning to play some total war tonight but screw that, it's SR time! Great job guys.

Good lord. This game got harder. Been trying to progress on Hard but have been consistently dying on the level 2 boss.

In other words: This is fun!

EDIT: And GREAT work on weapon and pickup rebalancing. It feels like almost every pickup is worth considering now. Makes for a much more exciting game.
