So Artifacts are super versions of totems? Do they drop like normal consumables?

Actually, these are the totems but they have just been renamed and had their aesthetics improved. Yep, they just drop like regular consumables.

Yeah, artifacts is a lot better considering the sci-fi setting, I think.
