Linux users! How's the game running for you!
« on: February 10, 2016, 02:53:35 am »
Looking for feedback form our friends playing on Linux based platforms.  Any prevailing issues, nagging problems or general complaints?  I hope not, but if there are any, please share.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Only ran into a single issue yet. I had the resolution set to 4k on my Windows machine, and that synced over to Linux with Steam cloud and that machine isn't capable of DSR, so it rendered at 4k, but only showed me the bottom left corner of the screen so I couldn't change the resolution.

It's an extremely niche issue, but that's the only thing I've ran into so far. Otherwise it runs perfectly fine on Linux for me. (Arch custom system running KDE Plasma 5 and GeForce 640)

It runs fine on Linux Mint 17.3. Only issue still is occasional screen tearing but I guess this more of a driver problem.

Screen tearing is a still a nightmare on Linux. Doesn't seem to be one good unified solution to it. A lot of people seem to fix it via their DE, but others via their drivers and further others via some CLI hacking.

I still haven't managed to get rid of tearing on my system, unfortunately.

Only issue has been one that I have with a lot of Unity-based games, owing to my dual-monitor desktop.  It happens the first time I open almost any Unity-based game, and I don't blame the game for it, it's a known Unity issue.
When I first launch a Unity-powered game, it defaults to going full-screen using the entire "available resolution" across both monitors.  The only way to fix it is to kill the game after it's opened, and then go to the Unity directory under ~/.config.  Under there you find directories for every Unity game you've run, and under each one is a config file controlling how Unity displays that game.  Just change the fullscreen option to 0 and then the resolution numbers to anything smaller than the resolution of one monitor.  Once that's done, I can open the game successfully.
I'm at work just now, so I don't have the config file to paste (so I can show you what it looks like).

The game runs perfectly well on my machine with Ubuntu 14.04 respectively Xubuntu 14.04.

Regarding the screen tearing issue: I have no screen tearing at all with VSYNC turned OFF (no hassle with driver et cetera needed).

Works fine for me on Ubuntu so far. No problems I've noticed.

ArchLinux user reporting in.

Everything is fine.

I only have performance issues because my graphic card is pretty lame. I turned down every eye-candy but the debris floating by the window and it runs smoothly. However I'm a bit surprised I run big fights on AI War without a lag on the same machine, but Starward Rogue stresses it. Maybe some optimizations will come later. Or I'll buy a better card for my Linux machine.

Anyway, no true problem. And I must add a big-big "thank you!" for you Arcen and your "fully Linux compatible" politic.
Please excuse my english: I'm not a native speaker. Don't hesitate to correct me.

v1.017 (the only version I've ever played) works fine on my Win7 boot, but when I try to launch the game on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS all I get is this:

Even the X to close doesn't work, I have to kill it from terminal. Verifying cache (twice, the second time after deleting StarwardRogueLinux_Data and both binaries) didn't help, nor did a restart.

How fix?

Are you getting anything in the logs?

Nothing in the logs, but running Ubuntu's software updater seems to have fixed it.

I also had a problem on the first run where it grabbed my mouse and wouldn't let go on Alt-Tab, but that went away after I restarted the app ::)
