Title: Linux feedback?
Post by: x4000 on January 21, 2016, 05:04:41 PM
Hey guys,

I wanted to get some more feedback from linux users in particular.  One person is reporting this problem: https://arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=18350

Anyone else having that on linux, or NOT having that problem?  garpu was having some other mild issues on linux that were since fixed, and has not reported the above issue, so I assume that it's working okay for him.  But you know what they say about assumptions and all that. ;)

I know some of the rest of you also play on linux, so I just wanted to get a sense for what distros people are on and how it is doing.  Technically unity only supports Ubuntu, but generally we've not had issues on any similar flavor.

I'll reboot into Mint in an hour or so, and report if I notice anything. I knew that thing would come in handy some day :P

I'm a Linux user but have not been involved in testing SR due to lack of time.  If you want to give me access for that purpose, I can try to reproduce this issue tonight.

Linux Mint 17.3, absolutely no issues to report, runs just fine. Maybe a tiny drop in performance but that's AMD's fault, not yours.

Linux user exclusively.  I haven't noticed those issues at all.  Video card driver issue?  (I'm using Nvidia's drivers.)

I am also a Linux user (using the open source AMD drivers on Arch Linux) and have not noticed any of the problems in that bug report.

Want me to send up the bat signal to other Linux people who might have time to test today?

I'm really glad to hear that most cases are not having an issue, though.  It's such an odd issue to have; it's like the matrix transforms at the GPU level are just completely off.  So that does make me wonder about the driver.

At this point I think we're good on testing this, because if it is a drivers issue that needs to be sorted out separately.  If it's a linux flavor issue, that's also not really something I can do anything about.  Frankly aside from tech support "have you tried this" sort of stuff, I'm not sure there's much I can do at this point.  Given this seems isolated, we can deal with this if it does come up as a larger issue.

The sample size here is small, but it's the same engine we've used in like 7 other games with plenty healthy linux populations, so this seemed an odd thing to happen.  Just in case it is a shader thing with the two types of shaders that are particularly new with this game only, I put in ways to turn those off.  So that may help as a workaround in case it's like a really old shader model incompatibility or something (it only requires shader model 3.0, which is circa 2004 or something like that).

Well, good to hear that I'm the only one having that issue. As I just posted on mantis, it probably isn't due to a driver problem as the binary driver has the same problem and my graphics card isn't that old.

Anyone of you using a *buntu 15.10? Maybe something to do with that?

Slackware, here.

Nope, no such problems. Just occasional lag issues, like the game is not running quite fluidly so the screen tears but that is gone fast so its not that distracting. Maybe its an issue with proprietary radeon drivers? It seems to occur randomly. Tried posting about that on mantis but my account activation link still didn't arrive.

Sorry about that, email on mantis has been bogged down the last couple of days and we literally just got that unclogged.  You should be getting your email very shortly, knock on wood.

For the screen tearing, is that with vsync on or off?  You may be able to mitigate that by running in windowed mode, but it's hard to be sure.  All of that stuff is on the GPU/OS side, though.

You MIGHT be able to adjust your screen refresh in the game and see how that works.

Tried V-Sync on which made it even worse (really visible tearing line then). Windowed mode does nothing. Also game has in average 220 fps with fast drops down too 100-150 fps when fighting. The tearing happens only at the top of the screen.

Eitherway, thanks for the help Chris.

My pleasure.  Sounds like it is a sync issue with the refresh rate, but that's definitely annoying for sure.

Left some feedback on Mantis but outside of a mouse issue, the game seems to run fine on my Linux machines.

Working fine for me so far on my laptop. Nvidia GTX880M, Ubuntu 15.10, 64bit Steam client.
