CTD on startup
« on: August 27, 2016, 08:55:38 pm »
Yep, just what the topic says. Tried deleting and redownloading from steam, same result, just crashes on startup. Any thoughts? Any other log files I can provide? output_log.txt attached.

Greetings.
Sorry for the trouble.
What is your system, setup, and specs? Extra monitors? Os? etc.
Can you provide the logs from StarwardRogue/RuntimeData/. Anything with log in it or the .txts.

Windows 10 pro 64 bit
1 monitor, 1440x900 max resolution

Intel Core 2 Duo, E7200 (2x2.53mhz cpus)
Radeon R9 200 series video card
Gigabyte ep45-ds3l motherboard, and I'm using the onboard network and sound.

Attached all the txt/log files from the specified directory, although they all look like there were last updated maybe a week ago (during my last run through the game), so I'm not sure how useful they will be.

The only thing that's changed on my end since the last time I played is my physical and IP addresses (aka I moved to a new house).

  • Hmm. Nothing in logs. Although, if you did delete it, how are you able to get logs from before you deleted it? Steam might be saving something to the cloud.
  • Is it a Unity CTD? When does it crash? Does the screen just never show up? Can you describe it more?
  • Try deleting your settings files /Starward Rogue/RuntimeData/settings.dat & file /Starward Rogue/RuntimeData/settings.bak.
  • Most problems have been from Unity being glitchy in certain cases and how it interacts with dual monitor systems. This doesn't seem to be related though.

It doesn't actually bring up any windows or anything. Steam simply says "preparing to start game". The game stays in "running" state for about a second then the "running" state goes away and that's that.

When I try to launch it without steam, it just shows the win 10 spinning circle for a little bit, then does nothing.

It generates the same output_log.txt I posted in the first post, in the StarwarsRogue_Data subfolder, and no other log files anywhere immediately visible.

Behavior repeats after I cleared out the folder completely (manually) and disabled 'steam cloud sync' for the game before reinstalling.

Do you have any other Unity games? Do they function correctly?

I know there have been some problems with the Windows 10 Anniversary updates, this also might be related.
Example:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4whqsw/warning_do_not_update_to_windows_10_anniversary/

Solutions seem to include:
  • Prayer (I kid)
  • Revert back to previous non-anniversary build (may not be possible anymore)
  • Update graphics drivers
  • Delete XBOX files
  • "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\<Name_of_the_Game_that_crashes>\TempState" might contain another useful log file

Yeah, AI War isn't loading up either, same symptoms.

ATI hasn't issued any updated drivers recently.
Reverting is not really an option.
By "delete XBOX files", do you mean uninstall the app?
Nothing useful visible in the tempstate directory.

Some Windows 10 users reported that it seemed that their graphics drivers were somehow corrupted/lost/something with the Anniversary patch. You might try uninstalling your drivers, rebooting, and reinstalling them.

That AI War doesn't run is really odd. Nothing was updated for it in ages (I think), which suggests that it is something else. You haven't reported any other changes, so the only thing that comes to mind is the Windows 10 updates.

Xbox Application. Yes.  Uninstalling it. I ran across a mention that removing it had helped someone. No idea if it might help or how that might turn out.

Weird. I had some crashes in other applications today, so I manually rebooted the computer, and now the game loads fine.

Wonder if Windows 10 has been ignoring my shutdown commands and going into low power mode instead.

I was reading around earlier and apparently they released another set of Windows 10 patches today, so that is also a possibility. Either way glad everything works now.
Cheers!
