AuGMENTED On Rock Paper Shotgun
« on: January 28, 2018, 10:20:27 am »
Nice bit of coverage on Rock Paper Shotgun! Probably the biggest piece of press coverage AuGMENTED has had so far.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/01/28/starward-rogue-augmented-expansion-released/

There's some criticism of some of the aesthetics of the game in there but that's all valid stuff. We could definitely do with nicer teleporter visuals, plus there's the usual lack of animations, of course. A bunch of the aesthetic stuff has been improved, especially the muzzle flashes for weapons, and the quality of the aesthetics for stuff in the gold floors is generally higher, but yeah there's still a lot of room for improvement on that front. It's fantastic to get coverage from such a big site, though. Nice! :)

Sweet. "More visual effects please!" as the biggest criticism isn't bad. I would have been more worried if it was about some major gameplay issues. It did give some ideas for suggestions though...

Quite. We've known about some of those issues for a while (so its not really a surprise) but definitely points out some things to try and address in the future. I'm not sure I'd want teleporting to be slower, but some kind of visual would be neat.

If you were invincible while teleporting, a longer teleport would not be a bad thing.  Not invincible would be a big NO.

There's already effective invincibility while teleporting (sort of: bullets around you get poofed).

Yeah, speaking of that behaviour, that's always looked super janky. I'd love to get a better solution for that.

It will also happily eat your missiles.

Question: Could that bullet-cancelling field apply a visual effect on the player for the duration? Something like a yellow version of the little electricity effect of the charge pad, just so you don't have to guess how long firing is useless. I think those teleporters currently have too much missiles in their diet.

The answer is almost always "yes" but what you really want to know is, "will it be easy?"
And I think only Keith can answer that.

I'm guessing it's just a matter of me adding support for a "show_this_bullet_pattern_after_teleporting" attribute on the entity XML elements, and one of you does the real work of setting up said pattern and assigning it there.

It might be some other non-bullet-pattern mechanic, though.
