Initial impressions - Oh god it's tiny at 4k!
« on: January 11, 2016, 01:34:25 am »
So, I got a 4k monitor for Christmas. Just fired up the game. Most of the text is tiny. I'll attach a couple of screenshots, but reading anything at the distance I normally sit from a monitor this size was downright difficult. I had to lean in significantly.

Additionally, one of the screens in the intro had text that went off the screen.

Didn't find any other bugs or issues that weren't already mentioned in the intro screen. I know it says the interface isn't coded in yet, but I'm not sure if the 4k issue will be addressed by that or not.

I can't create an issue for it right now in Mantis, as Mantis isn't letting me in for some reason. I'll try to sort that out.

Gameplay wise, I think I need to find a gamepad. Keyboard controls work in that it was playable, but it's pretty awkward for what feels like its should be played as a twin stick shooter.

I've downed my resolution to 1080p - many, many applications aren't coded to be aware of text scaling issues, and I'm not sure Acren's engine will have that ability - I'll make a note of it in mantis.

Yeah, this is common with Unity. I tried playing Last Federation in 4K and could barely make out any text at all.

If that's going to be the case, then the best fix might be to not let the game go to that resolution. It did it by default when I first ran it.

If it isn't meant to go higher than 1080p or 1440p, setting it to just not go past that if the native resolution is higher would avoid the problem.

A good idea, although Arcen will also need to say that they explicitly disabled them to avoid more bug reports of 4K screens not being detected. ;)

To be fair, I think on a screen that isn't just ridiculously densely pixeled or supersampled but actually SIZED for 4k, it'd look sweet.

The game's doing you a favor on that count, none of that story is making it to the end of the week.

Out of curiosity is the gameplay text as bad at 4K?

The gameplay UI is, yes. It's also miles away from the actual game view, as the map isn't scaled so it leaves a lot of empty space on all sides. Here's another screenshot.

It's especially silly in this screenshot as I can't see part of the room I'm in, and yet have tons of unused space. The camera is centered on me, I guess, but it looks pretty silly in this case.

Have you tried the screen scale slider in graphic settings? Is 3x enough to see things well?
It seems to exist for people that for some reason don't want to lower their resolution(there's also zoomout slider if your resolution feels too small).

No, honestly I didn't even see that option before, as the settings screen was also really small. :)

Setting screen scale up helps quite a lot, as does lowering the resolution. One of those should probably be a default on a resolution this high, though, so that it works "out of the box".
