Including the word 4X, or even including the word Hex or similar, is something I've considered but seems like it would be awkward in most cases.

Regarding tying the name of the game to an existing title, there is definitely a risk of alienating people who don't like the game.  But then again, we have an opportunity to pull in people who did like it.  Still, those people would be swayed by "it's another strategy game by Arcen" if they are going to be swayed by anything, so preaching to the choir there most likely.  So perhaps not having the word federation in the title at all is a good idea.

I need to find some short stories that are sci-fi online and run them through the word-cruncher and find interesting words.  Right now I feel like the pool of words that we're using isn't robust enough.

Mal: I like where you are going with a lot of your thinking, and it's very creative.  I want to avoid overt religious references, though.  Having references to the fact that there is this huge sentient planet is something that would be very cool, but I want to avoid comparing him to God for... reasons that will become clear in the game.

I'm also looking for something brief and kind of... elemental, I guess you could say.  That tends to mean that the longer the title gets, the less general it becomes.  "A Valley Without Wind" is very specific.  "The Lord of the Rings" somehow strikes me as less so.  "Star Wars" is really very nonspecific.  "The Last Federation" is very much on the nonspecific end, too.  "Pushing Ice" or "Foundation" or "The Vorkosigan Saga" are all nonspecific as far as I'm concerned, too.  The last one does have a proper noun in it, but it has a sort of sweeping feel to it.  Much moreso than "The Warrior's Apprentice."

I'm not sure if I'm making any sense with that last paragraph or not.  To some extent it's an "I know it when I see it" sort of thing.  And also, will it fit on a tiny, tiny steam capsule. ;)

Hey Chris, that definitely makes sense. With that feedback how about :

Will of Worlds

Summoned Galaxy

Crucible of Races ( if that's a bit on the harsh side , it could be Crucible of Nations)

Testament of Federations

The Ivorian Purpose

Servant Empires

No Nation like Ours

A couple outputs I liked from the generator and a few of my own:

Power Void (I love the double meaning)

Solar Enclave (Nice ring but maybe enclave is too...tribal)

Endless Echo (Kinda obvious but pretty strong)

Breaking Sky (As in, "breaking ground" i.e. colonization)

Breaking Heaven (In case sky is too similar to Skyward Collapse)

Sentient Stars (Don't know if this fits the theme)

Shadow Landing (Kinda ominous)

I'll keep working on ideas. I love this kind of thing.

Have we used "doctrine" yet? Reminds me of Sid Meier's (Brian Reynold's) Alpha Centauri. The early techs that were more concept than fabrication were "doctrines." The Spartans started out with "Doctine: Mobility," which aided in troop movement before any of the other colonists had anything similar. Of course, it wouldn't take long for the others to develop the same.

Doctrine: Foundation/Foundation Doctrine
Expansion Doctrine
Doctrinal Destiny (Final Fantasy contender)

I'm not super fond of doctrine, because it has a very Cold War vibe to it and seems historical rather than futuristic.  To me, at least.

The word "Cipher" is actually interesting, and I just put that into my dictionary, heh.

These two are interesting:

Breaking Sky
Shadow Landing

I think my favorite at the moment is one suggested this morning by Pablo:

Ashes Of An Empire

Maybe this was already suggested, but... "Empire's Rising"?

Unfortunately there is this: http://www.hardcoredroid.com/rising-empires-premium-review/

And I'm not really fond of the word Exodus, as I think that's not really what this game is about.

Others we've thought about:

The Last Empire
Ultimate Empire
Final Empire
Overarching Empire
Hidden Empire
Secret Empire
Empire of Ash and Steel

That's a definite possibility.

That's a definite possibility.

It came about when I was thinking about other words for "Legacy" and recalled the title of the sixth book in a series, the last one being--in a way--about the legacy the three main characters leave behind.

It was called "Dragon Fate."

Dragon Champion - follows the first main character, the champion of the clutch
Dragon Avenger - follows his sister, who avenges her parents' murder
Dragon Outcast - follows the third sibling, who was outcast from the nest
Dragon Strike - follows all three in striking down a common foe
Dragon Rule - follows all three in their formation of a ruling empire
Dragon Fate - follows all three as the empire collapses, and the resulting fate and legacy of the species

Mixed in that word and the kind of implications it had with what we'd been mulling over and ended up with "Fate of the Empire" which is completely and utterly agnostic in the timeline.  "This is the fate our empire has come to" (the civ is down to a single colony on a contested world) is just as valid as "the fate of our empire is yet to come" (it is our fate to rule this planet).  It is what you make of it.

Just thought I'd share the thought process, even if this one isn't intended as an obscure reference to anything (also, amazing series of books; highly recommend).

Disclaimer: I have not read much of this thread, so forgive any duplicate ideas or wrong directions.

Reading the description in the first post, the following words/ideas come to mind:
Establish
Expansion
Toehold
Infect
Subterfuge
Annihilation (of an empire/enemies)
Assimilate
Consume

If "empire" is used, I think it should be paired with a suitably futuristic-sounding word/phrase, as my default definition of empire makes me think historical, not galactic (e.g. Age of Empires). The same thing with "colony" as well -- both of those words work well, but need to be sci-fi'd up to represent the space/alien/future aspect.

"Ash," while implying destruction, also makes me think historical. However I'm not sure what sort of term you could use for "future wreckage" aside from ash. :)
