I like Pax Diaspora. It rolls of the tongue and also has the nice +5 Latin Bonus.

Thought of another variation: Pax Iritha. 1st page conversation leads me to believe that "Irith" is the name of the game's setting, thus the play on "Pax Romana" AKA the "Roman Peace."

I am really enjoying the variations on Pax. In addition to the Latin bonus, I'm sure that the Penny Arcade folks would offer Chris discounted booths at the Expo ;-)

+1 Pax Diaspora.

I really like Starlight Emperium. It's fresh, somewhat catchy, and immediately piques my curiosity.

The reason I dislike Empires in Exile is that it reminds me too much of the title of a generic RTS or TBS game made in the early 90s such as "Dune Wars", "Cosmic Conquest", "Age of Empires" etc.

I think you'd have more success appealing to a modern audience.

Yeah, I think you've got a lot of great points there.  I prefer names that make people do a second-take when possible, too.  A Valley Without Wind.  Shattered Haven.  Skyward Collapse.

I don't think that's something I'd be comfortable going with (a variation on Pax).  I love Latin, I took six years of it in school (or was it five?  Anyway, a lot).  But it's something that I think will alienate people a bit, and in this particular case there's nothing peaceful about this game.  Mixing Latin and Greek has to be some sort of sin, too. ;)  Actually, Catullus had a really funny poem about that.  I don't recall the name, but he was making fun of intellectual Romans who would pronounce certain word starts with a hard H to sound educated and Greek.  It's been a decade, so I forget the details, but the crowning joke there was about how (the region that is now Spain) "discovered that its name had been changed to start with an H."

Wow, totally a thread derail.  Anyway, I think that using two words that a lot of people don't even know the meaning of is not going to engender interest.

And there's 116 of them, so it's hard to figure out which one you mean.

Oh my, I was just about to chime in to say I really like the "Pax Diaspora" thing :-\.
Currently none of the five contestants really "clicks" for me...

EDIT:
One name I do like is "Shadowfall Empire", although it really does not feel very fitting to the scenario you described so far :-\.

I would probably also vote: other

of the current choices. Maybe open up a wider poll with multiple votes?

edit: also, Starlight Imperium may be a little close to Twilight Imperium. A 4x board game with hexes. And it may imply space-based.

Yes, I know.  I think it was in the 40s, but I could be mistaken.  In one of my years of Latin we had to translate about 60(ish?) of those 116, although we skipped around.

I thought that Shadowfall was a game, but I guess I was mistaken.  That's definitely a cool name, I'll have to tuck that away.  Actually, more than that: that's now the name of the SHMUP, it's perfect.  That will be absolutely perfect for that game, thanks for dragging my attention back to that word. :)

Well, the poll is basically only ones that I would consider, so having more possibilities in there isn't really going to help much.  The actual thread is more about voting other, so to speak.  I am still open to suggestions, and will update the poll as new possibilities arise, for sure.

Dangit!  No wonder it sounded so perfect.  I'm well aware of the game, I think I have an iphone version of it.  That one will have to go, it's too similar.  Shoot, I really liked that.

I put Pax Diaspora up there just for the heck of it, since it gets a lot of support.

I did think of that, but it turns out there is a book called Shadowfall.  So that one is back off the table, dangit.  We all thought the name was perfect on the staff until Keith pointed that out.

The genre does seem pretty crowded when it comes to names.

If there was one unique word that could be included in the 4x title, what would it be? Irith? That gets you out of a lot of the overlap in names with other games/media.

I plead ignorance of all ancient languages. ;)

There is also a AAA game for the PS4 called "Killzone Shadow Fall".

Overall I try to avoid using proper nouns from the game lore in games, as that tends to feel too limiting to me.  There are 10ish races there, and you can play as any one of them, so there's not some central race like the Hydrals in TLF.  My planned name for the planet you are squabbling over is Irith, and so that could work for that reason.  There's not really a reason that can't be done in terms of the story later expanding and not fitting that anymore.  But I don't know if that is really going to be a realistic prospect anymore.

Yeah, I felt like that was different enough, though.

Irith sounds like Irish with a terrible lisp.
