I didn't like Proto Colony at all. But, Spectral Empire could work.

I'd love to see your take on a race of ghosts.  Almost completely unable to interact with the material world?  What's their tech look like?
(Reminds me of Dragon's Egg a bit, the inhabitants of the neutron star thought of gravity in either 'it's held up' or 'on the ground' as things accelerated so quickly that falling was basically instantaneous.  Oh, and they considered humans to be a gas).

While "Empire" in general strikes me as generic, I applaud you for not picking anything even more generic or outright misleading. Spectral Empire has my imperial seal of approval.

It could indeed be the Ghost of the Empire, depending on how the backstory goes.

• Emperor of the Fading Suns is a cult classic Grand Space game. Several of the propose names have been similar, and you may wish to avoid that similarity.
• Elemental: War of Magic, Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, Startide Rising, and MtG:Fallen Empires are more pre-existing names that are pretty similar to proposed names.
• The description sounds like a alien/future version of Europa Universalis, where you start with a single province nation.
• Some more word combinations.
• Conquest of _____ (Irith? seems a little generic)
• Rebirth: The Next Federation
• Renatus: Para Bellum
• Transcendent
• Destiny
• Transcendent Destiny
• Destiny Transcendent

I really like the 'Transcendent Destiny' one.

I really like Age of Ashes myself.  Not very positive as you would prefer but sounds like it would really represent the theme of the game - almost-extinct race trying to rebuild against all the odds.

Everything with "of", "empire", "age" or "destiny" sounds generic and over used. Kind of sounds like "someone ran out of ideas". Spectral Empire sounds ok though.

Probably because it's a cliche word.  "Spectral" is spicy enough that the clicheness of "Empire" evens things out.

(And for some reason this reminded me of a quip I made yesterday about Battlefield Hardline.  "Battlefield 4: Control of Battlefield XIII: Part 4: The Battle on the Field: Hard Red Line")
