There's something to be said for originality.  Tell me: what genre is "Sins of a Solar Empire?"  Okay, fine, that has the word Empire in there.  But what about "Braid?"  Etc.

I see the point about Empire, though.  That, or Nations, or Age, tend to be the big word.  Age of Nations. (AOE + RON)

There's a lot of commentary about how that doesn't sound like a 4x game to people, and thus how they wouldn't click into it seeing that name on steam.  It irks me, because I like the name quite a lot, but I think it's worth listening to.

People have made a good point that the word "Empire" or "Imperial" is strongly associated with 4x games.  I'm thinking that I'd prefer Empire over Imperial, but I suppose we could see.  I'd be open to up to 4 words at this point, if we can do something really cool (Sins of a Solar Empire is 5, and works).

I really like Empires In Exile in particular.

How about Ruined Empire.

That's a good one, although it's already an expansion for a big MMO, so I want to avoid it.

Proto Empire might be interesting.  Something that really conveys a sense of high technology and the future would be good.

The Ashen Empire has already been taken by the middle-age empire of Ermor. ...Dominions 4, anyone?
And the Age of Ruin, IIRC, occurs in Dwarf Fortress.

I find picking a name to be the single most difficult aspect of game design.
So, suggestions...

• Among Empires
• They were Emperors
• Ruina Imperii

PS: Just throwing in something futurey-sounding like proto or chrono could really come of as needless babble, especially if the word's meaning doesn't even fit the theme.
