Social Progress! ^_^

That header font is so happy and perky... is it the intended effect though?

It's mainly meant to be imperial and regal, but with a happy sort of flair to it, yeah.  We use that font in a number of places for headers and for regal type scripts -- the coloring has a big effect on the tone of the font, as you might expect. :)

But yeah, in my view the Social Progress screen and the Tech screen are the two main "reward" screens, if that makes sense.  If you think about Civ 5, you have the tech tree and the culture unlocks, and those are the screens where I feel like I'm being rewarded and getting to choose my prize. :)

I'm willing to alpha test. I think I would be of most assistance with combat refinement or finding "best path" issues.

Awesome, I have you marked down.  And yeah, I have a feeling you'd be quite good at those bits in particular, too. :)

I am also interested in Alpha testing, and would like to see how I can end up breaking thing :)

Wow,
You probably already have enough people, but wanted to volunteer for the alpha if you have room. I've been a fan of Civ and Alpha Centauri for quite a while. I wasn't as good at those as I was at GalCiv 2, but maybe that was GC being more straight forward and not as deep as the others. I might not be as great as some other players here, but my interest is very piqued. If you could use another person I would love to have you consider me.

Thanks much,
Teal

Is this the volunteer for alpha thread? :)

If so, I'd like to throw my name in the hat.

Thanks, added you both!  Sorry for missing this for so long.  And for being delinquent in the science thread I started, too.  I'm juggling so many freaking things at the moment, and I have to put down one or two things every so often in order to keep the balls in the air.

Thanks for understanding, as you guys always do. :)

It certainly seems to be :)

Please consider me for the alpha as well, though I'll completely understand of there are already enough names in that particular hat.  Either way I'm looking forward to seeing how your slightly different take on the 4x genre works.  Hopefully it'll be just as impressive as it appears!

I probably already said I'd join in, but if I didn't, consider me as having said so now.

Though at this point you could probably just consider me to be willing to join in all phases of testing pretty much just by default now.

Definitely cant wait for this to get going; the game looks fascinating, and I'm also bored out of my mind.  Endless free time, nothing to fill it with.  Been mostly Nuclear Throne and Isaac: Rebirth over and over lately.  And AI War when I feel like a good 2-hour session (games like that never get short sessions out of me, hah).

Winter is not helping the boredom, either.

Haha, yeah, I definitely do.  I didn't have you on the list, surprisingly, but I would have thought to ask you anyhow.

Ah, sorry to hear you're so bored at the moment.  Hopefully I can fix that for you in a month or so! ;)

Right now based on my current internal schedule, I should have all of the systems fully specced to a ready-for-implementation status (which includes all the general data entry for them, too) by the end of next Wednesday.  Then it will be at least a week before Keith finishes coding all those pieces, but I'll be testing other stuff in the meantime.

Then there's going to be a whole lot of mess to clean up based on first-pass "just get something we can experiment" sloppy UIs needing refinement into real UIs if their mechanics work, or else refactored into something else if their mechanics are less than ideal.  That will be pretty light on me in terms of implementation work, because that sort of speccing doesn't take much time at all.  It's going to take Keith quite a while to implement, though, I'm sure.  "Lots of little things," basically, and GUIs are always painfully slow to do well.

But I won't be remotely idle, because I'm going to be going through literally hundreds of buildings with thousands of stats working on getting those balanced the way that I want.  Right now I have a first-pass version of those that feels like it is in the ballpark, but I want to get it a lot closer than that for an actual game release even to alpha.  So I'll be hammering the heck out of that, plus logging more bugs and change requests, while Keith is working on the code for his stuff.

Depending on how long all that takes, we're looking at practically the start of March for bringing in alpha players.  Possibly a week earlier than that if things go optimistically well, but I'd rather give you guys something more polished than getting a lot of distracting feedback on things that I already know need tuning.

Then from there we're off to the races with the alpha.  There will still be some content that needs to be added at that point, including a number of visual things and over half of the victory paths.  And pretty much all of the tutorials, I imagine.

This is running a bit later than I wanted, but not disastrously so like TLF was at this point last year.  This is also feeling a lot more solid to me than TLF was at this point last year, so the extra up-front time is definitely worth it.  Alpha isn't going to be about trying to figure out how to fix large tracts of the game or whatever, it's going to be about refining things to that aspects of the implementation don't get in the way of what the game already is.  That's a nice change of pace, heh. ;)

Either way, looking forward to seeing more about this, Arcen games are some of the few I can pre-order and not feel let down.

*staggers in late*
So I just found out that I'll be free until the middle of April (in a good way) (unless something terrible happens).

Do you still want testers? I've never done much testing before so I can't say I'll be much use, but if you're wanting more people to get hopelessly lost in the game I'd like to give it a shot. (And if not I'll (probably) actually be able to afford it when it comes out!)(!!!)
