Whew guys. Coming into this thread was a surprise. I don't think either side was particularly aggressive at first, but things escalated mainly because disagreement was taken to be insult.
Cinth is correct on the bulk of what he says, in terms of the focus on the underlying game.
kasnavada is right that a lot of the tooltips and so on need to be there, but if you think that interface hasn't been a concern, that's way off. Everything has been designed with interface in mind, which wasn't the case with, say, Skyward Collapse.
Right now there are a number of things where I haven't messed with the interface more yet because I know what I want to do there, and getting the stuff figured out that I don't yet know what to do with is more important testing-time-wise.
Also, why have players test blind and with few tooltips? Simple: testing what mechanics are intuitive enough to not require much explanation, versus those that are going to require a lot of explanation. Many players won't read tooltips in my experience, so if the game requires lots of reading to be at all playable, then that's a big problem. If you guys can find your way through, more or less, without tooltips, then that's a good sign for those non-readers to come.
In terms of tooltips and so on in more detail, that is something I hope to have sooner than 3 weeks out from release, but there's a lot of things that have not happened the way I want.
I'll also mention that the game was feature complete when we started beta. BUT some of the features sucked in various ways, so we've been gutting those features and redoing them. So you're seeing some features that are missing because of that sort of thing.
Regarding AI passivity, the big barrier right now is that if they show up with unbridled hostility, they're going to kill you. They're perfectly capable of coming over and doing it, and in earlier builds did so. The things that are required before I can do that well are having you be able to discuss things with the AI and tell them to stop, or take this thing and stop, etc. And the big holdup on that has been figuring out the best interface for that. So some "lesser-value" things that still very much need to get done in the short term have been a focus in the meantime.
I wanted to be at a different point at this point in the process, believe me. But there is a method to my madness, and we're all ultimately working toward the same goals.
