Another opportunity for creative input: disease names!
« on: February 12, 2015, 09:03:08 pm »
I know that I keep creating these threads and then disappearing from them, and I greatly apologize for that.  It's not my intent, and I will be back on all of them.  I'm just running in a million directions at once right now, and so when I toss these things out they are largely things that can be worked on in my absence by the community and then I come back and can continue working with you guys more.

Once I get past the current hump of the design work and truly into the full testing phase, I'll have more time in general for this sort of thing.

Anyway, what I'm looking for this time are fun disease names that are not real diseases.  These would all be diseases that any of the organic races could contract in SBR.  The appropriate ones from TLF are being pulled over:

    Maggot Pox
    Teethworms
    Black Bubbles
    Redrash
    Plumping Tubers

What other fun names can you come up with?  Unlike in TLF, the individual diseases here don't have as much to them to differentiate them.  However, it's possible to have a lot more of them going on, and thus your hospitals and (essentially) CDC working with more of them at once.  The dynamic is different.  Basically for these all I need are names, in other words.  What stats there are for these are procedural, most likely, although I'm still typing up the specs for this bit.

Keep it PG, of course.  But anything from a devastating-sounding illness to something mild like the common cold is fine name-wise.  These should all be organic, not computer viruses.

Cheers, and thanks if you have ideas!

The list grows!  Awesome, folks. :D

Here's the way I'm actually defining the data, and the values I'm putting in: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1o44nCgPqDBDlG5F74yBc_FoahTwFP34n5r8lfZb7GIc/edit?usp=sharing

Turns out I'm making these a little more specific than I originally planned.  Folks just had such great suggestions!

If people want to suggest a style and IsAirborne and the severity, please feel free.  The styles list is:

    Viral
    Bacterial
    Fungal
    Parasites
    Toxin
    Genetic

Ah yes I remember plumping tubors from 1 of my game's in TLF, nearly wiped out the Evucks.

Got a couple of names for diseases:

Brain Maggots

Nose Caterpillars

Infectious Bubbles

Dehydration Bacteria

Black Holes

Enlarging Spots

Skin Bane

Contagious Shrooms

and that is all I've got for now

AI 1 = Chris.

AI 2 = Keith.

Nurgle's Rot

Though more seriously, um...

Mitochondrial Decay -

Carmine Fever

Synaptic Obstruction Syndrome

Nociceptive Hyperstimulation

Proprioceptive Dysfunction Syndrome (There is a real disorder that more or less matches this description, so I dunno)

Ocular Infestation (ow)

Sympathetic/Parasympathetic Nerve Corruption

Alveolar Decay

Arterial Hives

Dreadnought Plague

Neinzul Parasitic Infestation

Zenith Corruption

Murdoch's Disease

I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Theme Hospital has some pretty funny "diseases".  Broken Wind, 3rd Degree Sideburns, and Corrugated Ankles are among my favorites.

Anaquillian Fluke  (parasite)

Villousmaniasis (Deadly bacterial infection)

Panoctus Flu (several various bacterial strains cause this)

Drogh's Disease (CNS attacking virus)

Traccidioidomycosis (Traccidioides fungus)

The Ooze (not to be confused with the Ohes)

Heh.. I'll go back and modify mine just a tiny bit.  I don't like that The Ooze also being a parasite, but I can't think of something interesting right now.

Traccidioidomycosis is spread through the spores so it's airborne (think Valley Fever).

Thought about it and boom!  The Ooze should be like poison ivy or sumac.  So toxin.  Think, the nastiest festering skin lesions  >D

Something new...  Plueraphage. Amoeba.
Causes Plueraphagia - Full body infection, causes systemic cysts (can be really bad if it hits CNS or cardio-respiratory systems.
Causes Plueraphistis - gastrointestinal infection.  Montezuma's Revenge has nothing on this  >D

There is some twisted kind of fun in this  8)

So my amoeba needs to be reclassified?

New:
Parasitic Xenomorph.  Airborn yes, deadly if allowed to fully cycle. Parasite.

Neobastis. Disfiguring genetic disorder (severity 10).

Also, I probably should have formatted this better (2 diseases from one bug):
Something new...
Plueraphagia - Full body infection, causes systemic cysts (can be really bad if it hits CNS or cardio-respiratory systems.
Plueraphistis - gastrointestinal infection.  Montezuma's Revenge has nothing on this  >D
All caused by the Plueraphage amoeba.

  • PITA (Pain In The Ass -- a social affliction that makes everyone else around the "afflicted" grumble and find other places to be)
  • Scalerot (fungal infection forming between/under the scales and scutes)
  • Feathermites (parasite)
All I can come up with right now.

pleura is the Greek root for what you are trying to describe. It just caused my brain to react. You might want to switch the letters.

Total Immunity Failure - Genetic (probably makes victim substantially more susceptible to other diseases, not damaging in and of itself)
Arbor Fever - Viral 25
Electroma - Fungal 10
Singularity Virus - Viral Airborne 50
Hypoamino Disease - Toxin 35
Cerulean Weeping - Parasites 90
Breachworm - Parasites 75
Luceline Fever - Viral 10
Lithoma - Fungal 15
Aquiline Dread - Toxin 40
Bloodmark - Bacterial Airborne 35

Ugh, just reading the whole list is making me feel gross. I guess that's a good thing--some of these sound really nasty. This must be what Nurgle feels like on a daily basis.
