What is the shaded area when placing certain buildings?
« on: June 05, 2015, 07:33:08 pm »
When I buy certain buildilngs, e.g. Logging Camp or Engineering firm (for examples, I'm sure there are more), a greenish shaded area covers some of the hexes on the map.

What does this shaded area represent, please?

it represents the areas you can and can not build in I'm pretty sure there's a toltips that says so when deciding were to put your building although its not exactly what I just said.

But, there are no green icons that represent buildable hexes at all.  Just a shaded area, and a non-shaded regular map area.  It won't let me build in either shaded or non-shaded areas.  I thought the green icons represented areas where you can build.  Why is the shaded area different than the hexes with the green icons?

Are you referring to the bluish halo around building like the Police or Hazmat?  IIRC those pop up when you place buildings to show coverage.  Maybe a SS to illustrate what you see, so we can better answer you?

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Here is a screenshot . . . the blue highlighted area around the logging camp I am trying to place is faint, but you can see it better if you click and expand the screenshot.

I am trying to place a logging camp, and the faint bluish highlight on some hexes is what I am talking about.  What is this highlighted area?

That's the pollution cleanup / police radius of the lander.  Hazmat and Police buildings give off the same halo.

If you look at the bottom of the display you can see that the Net Pollution Layout is being displayed. The darker area is the change due to your new building placement.

Thanks!  Also, placing an engineering firm gives this bluish tinted halo.  Why would that building also show this halo?

So, my follow up questions - why does it show pollution and police radius when I am placing a logging camp?  And ptarth, do you mean the text bottom right where it says, "Net pollution emissions (and cleaning)?  I don't see the darker area you are referring to.  Where is that, please?

These things REALLY need to be explained in the game.  I love Arcen games so much (except Last Federation - I just couldn't get into it).  But, often times their games are almost impenetrably difficult to understand until you ask A LOT of questions.  I sure can't wait for the tutorial!

I think its so you can efficiently cross reference whatever pollution out put/crime the buildings personally I have never had a problem understanding arcens games(apart from the demo of ai war that confused me a little bit) granted though apart from tlf this the only game of arcens I have extensively played.

Because the building creates pollution.  Pollution is bad for a variety of reasons :)

Thanks again everyone.  I think I understand the mechanic now.

I was mainly referring to Last Federation with my statement that their games are difficult to grok.  That one just never clicked with me.

I think I will really love Stars, though.  Once it all clicks, it's going to be a blast!

...why does it show pollution and police radius when I am placing a logging camp?  ...
So you can make informed decisions about placement. You want to cover crime filled areas with police. You want to put hazmats where you have pollution. You want to
put lumber camps (which cause pollution) in an area where your hazmats will clean it up. Etc.

Yes. It will choose an overlay that is helpful (sometimes, sometimes it isn't).

I don't see the darker area you are referring to.  Where is that, please?
It depends on the building and the strength of the effect caused by that building. So if you choose a factory you see it has a much darker pollution generation area than a lumbermill or a Science Lab.

If you are getting frustrated, read some of the other beta experiences. Many of their questions have been answered by earlier beta testers in spoiler tags.

tlf was the first arcen game I played and I absolutely love that game especially the soundtrack I like what I've seen so far with this game regarding soundtrack but it still doesn't hold a candle to tlfs for me personally.
