Taking over territories
« on: June 15, 2015, 07:35:41 pm »
Super newbie here.  So, with this whole new territory system, that sounds awesome by the way, how do you take over more territories?

Could some kind soul please point me to the thread that talks about how you take over other territories, so you can expand?  From the build notes, I read and understood it that you can only place buildings in your own territory.  So, how do you expand, please?

Thank you!

I haven't played them yet, but the way I understood it you have to place a district center.

Ack, thanks!

* Fixed a, er, rather glaring oversight when it came to capturing new territories.  The player was set up to be able to do that with civic centers and so coordinated military command, but only at a distance from their current city center.  You were always meant to be able to capture closer territories, but that logic got put in at the last minute on the player side (it was kept more permissive prior to that for testing purposes), and so we missed the fact that this was impossible to do.  Now you'll easily discover you can with military buildings.

Thanks Chris!  Glad I could help in any capacity!  Yeah, I tried to place a civic center, but it needed to be 12 hexes away, and there was no place in my territory to place it.  I guess that's what you were talking about it being impossible.

So, I have to build military buildings on the border of my territories, and it will expand my territory?

For example, in my game I was just playing around with, there was a forest wonder that gave me 4x adjacency bonus for crops, however it was two hexes outside my territory.  How, exactly, would I get this forest wonder within my territory so I can start building crop fields around it?

Pardon my ignorance, but I am still unclear on how combat and military buildings really even work.

Thank you!

If you restart steam, the game will update and things should work better.  I'd rather not actually answer your questions directly -- if the game is not making it clear, that's definitely a problem, and I'd love to find out what exactly causes the lightbulb moment for you and see if we can make the game have that happen for other people.

I feel like a jerk for not just answering your question, but future players (just random folks after 1.0) won't have me there to answer questions like this, so my goal is to make the game do its own talking whenever I can. :)

Thanks again!

No jerk feelings here.  I completely understand.  It SHOULD be intuitive.  I will give it a try after dinner and let you know if I'm smart enough to figure it out.   :o

Just a thought Frobodine, I think this is new for everyone, but i think that one of the other really veteran players will probably figure it out and post a 'how to' for you, hang in there and give them a bit, shouldn't take too long, these people are pretty smart and quick.  :)

p.s.  sorry that one of those really smart and quick people isn't me, haha, i'm a noob and not in the beta yet, but hoping to be later. I have a hard time with menu's, so i am hoping that chris will need help there when i get into the game and i can figure it out.  :)

I'm sure they will.  I do want to try and figure it out myself.  I haven't played around with military buildings all that much anyway.  So, it will be good for me.  I just have to figure out what to research to get military buildings.  Shouldn't be too tough.

Once you try it it should be obvious as to how it works.  I just figured it out myself now that it works :)

Ok, I think I figured it out.  Building a civic center allowed me to gain more territory.  But, what is the difference in the blue lines around some territory, and the blue and black striped lines around other territory, as shown in this picture?

The striped lines are when two unlike territories border one another, versus a solid line is when two territories of the same owner (or lack thereof) border one another.

Regarding the 277 population, I wasn't trying to play correctly.  I don't think I built any housing.  I'm not paying attention to power or resources right now.  I'm just trying to figure out how and where things get built and how they relate to each other.  And spending too much time looking in the tech tree for buildings.

Ooh, that brings up another question - in the summary at the top of the screen, why are some resources/things highlighted in color, while others are greyed out?
