Do spies do anything right now?

So in my evucs game I'm trying to spy on thoraxians, even had spying upgrade, but only thing it seems to be doing is increasing their mistrust in my so seems like my spy is caught everytime? At least I haven't discovered who thoraxian leader is and intel report tab is empty...

I don't think so, but I'm not sure. I'm also not sure the thief work. I haven't seen them do anything, but their effect might just be subtle, or slow. Mantis it.

They do work, but they are:
1) fiddly
2) poorly documented
and most importantly
3) not too fun for me even though I know how they work.

So most likely these are either going to get the axe completely or get massively redesigned.  That goes for spies and thieves, and to a lesser extent diplomats.  I'm not keen on how those turned out.
