I don't think Steam can ban you from playing the games you own.  They can ban you from the forums, but can they really ban your account so completely that you cannot play your own games?

I think they can shut down your account completely, but they do it for things like fraudulent transactions and such. You pretty much have to deserve it.

In difference from Origin, that banned players completely for quoting a guy, spouting profanities, telling him to stop. I loved that one. "You told someone off on the forums, and in doing so, you quoted profanities, therefor you may no longer play the games you have bought."

Logic!

Yea, there's risks whatever way you go, and steam is probably one of the least risky ways.

Origin is another matter, as EA has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of respect for... well, anything.  Including itself.
Have ideas or bug reports for one of our games? Mantis for Suggestions and Bug Reports. Thanks for helping to make our games better!

Origin: Really the only thing keeping me form buying the C&C Ultimate collection. The games are great (ignoring C&C4...), but I'm not going to bother if I have to include origin in the collection.

There are actually a lot of them, by indies anyhow.

Yes, this came as a surprise to me when I found this out not so long ago.
