Skyward Collapse Steam
« on: May 10, 2013, 09:57:45 pm »
I've been following the development of Skyward Collapse, and am planning on getting it as soon as the beta starts. However at the end of the trailer post, it says "Launches on Steam on May 23rd!"
This game isn't going to be steam only is it? Or will it be available through the usual channels Arcen games are sold through as well?

I'm pretty sure it'll be available via the "usual channels".

Yep, definitely on our store and GamersGate on the same date. And green man gaming right around that time, hopefully same day. Macgamestore right around the same time. Have not talked to any other distributors yet as we've just been so slammed actually finishing the game, but I'm quite hopeful for at least one other major recently new partner of ours.

We tend to call out steam because otherwise that's all anybody asks. Not kidding. :)

That's great news! Really glad it won't be steam only, not a fan of the online DRM!
Looking forward to getting my hands on it, this game looks incredible.

Despite what Steam is I don't mind it. Like the good old days where I had my entire collection on the shelves in the corner of a room. Steam provides that shelf for my digital content, and it saves me going to the 4-5 other online vendors I buy games from... I just prefer steam codes.

Steam has its utility, no doubt. I have quite a few games on it.
I quite strongly prefer DRM free however, and handle my own archiving of digital games is all.

As one aside: all of our Steam games are 100% DRM-free.  Aka, you can just take them right out of Steam and use them yourself.  They don't require Steam to be running or even installed in order to function.  Not bad eh? :)

DRM free games on Steam ? Your sure the space-time continuum can handle that ? :p

Part of my problem with Steam is the fact that all your games are tied to a single account.

For any online service, there's a nonzero risk of getting your account banned.  Usually the ToS gives the provider wide leeway to do this.  For example, you might make a controversial forum post, or relieve stress after a bad day by using strong language and calling people names in multiplayer, resulting in a ban.

If you have a different CD key and account for each game, like Blizzard did on the old-school battle.net back when they were cool, then the most you're risking is a single game, and only the battle.net multiplayer feature of that game; you can still do single-player and direct TCP/IP multiplayer.

OTOH with Steam, you're risking your entire collection -- potentially hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of games -- if your account gets banned.  And you can't play single player, since a lot of games require Steam to run.

As a result, I only have a couple games on Steam, and don't do multiplayer on Steam.  More than once, I'd been ready to purchase a game and changed my mind when I saw it was Steam-only (e.g. Torchlight 2).

I own a non-steam copy of TL 2.   ???

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

I find it easy not to get myself banned.

I've never been banned from an online game either, but the possibility makes me uneasy enough that I avoid Steam.

EDIT:  I was looking at Torchlight 2 on Gamersgate, and what I read implied that it only exists on Steam; going to the developer's website, you can get a non-Steam version.  I guess I was implicitly assuming that if a game had a non-Steam version, then Gamersgate would always offer it alongside the Steam version.  I'll probably buy it pretty soon then...not immediately because I want to save time for Skyward Collapse...

It all comes down to the fact that you're asking someone permission to use something you theoretically own. Just because the last several times you asked they said yes doesn't mean they won't cut you off in the future for any or no reason. Or if they disappear.

That's fantastic that your games are actually DRM free even on Steam. You guys are great.
Being able to make your own backup cuts out the permission asking phase.

But..... all you have to do is NOT be a complete troll or something.   From what I've seen you have to be pretty nasty to get totally banned from Steam.

Really, I never understand the anti-Steam thing that I see at times.   The way I see it, it's LESS risky (by quite a bit) than normal.   If my PC goes insane and dies (as my previous one did), I can lose *lots* of stuff..... but not if it's Steam titles, since I can just re-download them and in many cases get my saves back.
