Let's Player Recommendations
« on: May 10, 2013, 09:26:35 AM »
Since Arcen have been struggling lately in terms of garnering much Let's Player or reviewer attention, I thought it would be a good idea for us forumites to help come up with a few names that it might be worth Arcen sending a free copy of the game to.

Now, even though I think that this is a good idea, I can't actually help too much as I don't watch too many Let's Play commentators. I'll start the ball rolling, though!

OTG -- http://www.youtube.com/user/OverTheGun

Gets around about 1000 - 2000 views per vid. Recently started a segment called Indiegestion, which looks at new indie games. Negative -- I can rarely recall him doing a strategy game video, although he did recently do Talisman Prologue which plays a lot like a board game. Won't trash a game as he doesn't play stuff he doesn't at least like a little.

Necroscope -- http://www.youtube.com/user/Necroscope86

Does all kinds of videos. Has played Civilization in the past -- good sign. Gets about 1000 - 1500 views per video.

Extra couple from me, comments later in the thread:

http://www.youtube.com/user/MetalCanyon

Please post any more recommendations.

Edit (might as well add the recommendations to the main post):

While he's probably WAAAY too busy to have time for a proper series Jesse Cox is probably a good channel. But he's hugely popular, so I doubt he'll have time for "smaller" games. After all, it's his job.

The two most prolific strategy LPers I know of are Das24680 and Quill18. Das is pretty fair in his opinions and f'in loves strategy games, and quill... I can't watch his videos for more than five minutes because he has to be the most stereotypical fedora wearing nerd in existence, but he get's ~10,000 views a video, so hey there's that.
-- http://www.youtube.com/user/Das24680, http://www.youtube.com/user/quill18

A few that popped to my mind are the aforementioned Das24680, webgamingcentral, and TekkorGJC (Tekk's Tavern). Das has been mentioned enough I'd leave it at that.

Also, don't forget Force ( http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGhs9S33RAeT5DEuKTO4Oew ). He covered Valley 2, in the past, so you may already have him on the list Erik, but he covers a decent number of Indie games and he's always fair with them, IMO.

How about a different reviewer that doesn't get 1000 requests per day? Someone like Capt. duck.

Solid, comical, and a good following.

Maybe go to Sips of the yogscast. He does a lot of indie games 'evening with sips' episodes, and he's done stuff like Atom Zombie Smasher and Game Dev Tycoon. He's always really into his actual games and always has an amazing positive attitude about what he's doing in-video. He's got some stuff lined up and I don't know that he's got the time necessarily, but him doing a video would be pretty huge.

This is a good idea.   Just make sure whoever you're selecting is at least a fairly positive player...  and I dont mean that to "skew" the results or something like that, but I know many LPers that are similar to myself in that they'll rant and complain alot even when playing a game they really like quite a ton.   Can totally give the wrong impression in that situation.

Yeah, some commentators are a little more in the "Angry Nerd" vein. Probably best to avoid those, too.

I don't follow other Let's Players, mainly because so many of them suck horribly :P (Including me!)

About the only two LPers I watch (semi regularly maybe, if a vid interests me or is a game overview) are Jesse or TB.  Jesse doesn't seem like the sort to play skyward collapse, he's not much of a strategy player that I've seen.

That's a rather big understatement :D Also, TB would likely murder you for calling him a "Let's player" ;)

Whatever. Youtubers then!  I don't really watch people play a game to completion. Just enough to get an idea of it.

It's pretty hard for me to find an LPer that isn't a carbon-copy of Pew/Tobuscus (egah to that) or is a Minecraft junky or...just terrible. I don't have any suggestions atm especially for a strategy game like this one. I might take a look at it but I'm not a 1000+ view YouTuber. Outside of Starcraft 2, I just don't see many strategy gamers on YouTube that get that high of views. Love to be proven wrong though...

It's several months out. But honestly not that far off so I'll say it.

Pssst, Pax Prime booth. Really even the last two games are likely underexposed enough that it could help them ;)

Aye, it does seem hard to find good ones that specifically do strategy titles.... those dont always tend to make good video footage.   I'm familiar with alot of good LPers, but..... they're all mostly action and retro titles, that they do.

I'd love to do one myself, which I might, but that wouldnt actually accomplish anything.

When deciding on a new game to buy, especially for titles that aren't part of an existing series, I check out the game on Youtube.

The commentary and impressions of the person playing the game do play a role in my decision, but more important is the raw gameplay footage.  Trailers and the like don't really suffice, because they tend to show only the most exciting moments of the game, whereas what I most want to know is how I'll be spending most of my time in-game.

Recruiting people with huge followings to post videos obviously has great marketing value (especially if you think there's a decent chance the poster will give a good review).  But just having videos out there also has some value, to help people like me who have heard of the game, but aren't quite willing to commit to buying it until they learn more.  So if Misery or other people on this forum, or even Arcen staff, wants to post gameplay videos, with or without commentary, you absolutely should do it, because it's somewhat helpful (although maybe not quite as high-impact as a glowing review from an LPer with tons of followers).

Aye, quite true.  I do the same thing, videos like LPs, particularly those that have good commentary and dont try to make stupid jokes every .5 seconds, tends to influence my buying decisions pretty heavily.   Great way to see what a game is really like.   Trailers really dont do it, I dont even watch the things since I know they wont suffice.

Anyway, the one problem with the more well-known LPers is simple:  They all have specific preferences, as most gamers do.  I honestly just cant think of one that this game would do well with, it being a strategy title.   If I do come up with any ideas on that bit I'll be sure to list them here.

But yeah, there needs to be SOMETHING.   Particularly since the game is kinda confusing until you figure everything out.   I'm thinking it would be a good idea to link to such videos (once some are done) on the game's site, so people looking at the site can notice them.

Though obviously any of this should wait until all of the main gameplay stuff is put in, which is mostly the Woes right now.

I remember OTG saying he's a big fan of Games Workshop, so strategy games won't be foreign to him or anything.

The two most prolific strategy LPers I know of are Das24680 and Quill18. Das is pretty fair in his opinions and f'in loves strategy games, and quill...
