Isn't 120 turns far too long for a first/easy game ?
« on: May 09, 2013, 04:45:11 pm »
Hi all,

I just realized that a full game of 120 turns is really long, and could last many hours...

Don't you think this is far too long for beginners ?

This will not appeal to more casual player, like when I would like to play just one hour a at the end of a long day...

What do you think?

Well, you can make it 90, but I admit the default feels a little long.

That might be because we don't have the stuff like cataclysms to mix things up, but I admit to just skipping turns without actions because I feel like moving things on quicker. Mostly I skip blue's actions, because screw scrolling all the way over to blue's towns! I'll just save up 9 and dump them all at once!

I guess you don't want to hear that my first games were at the 200 turn length :)

I don't think a 2 or 3 hour long match is long at all.

The static default for turn length could sit at 30, 90 for a full game, and that shouldn't take more than 2 hours to play.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Right, 2 or 3 hours is not so long for many people, but I think 90 turn is just too much for a first test of the game...

And by now, with all those forum reading and bug reporting, I never manage to get to the end of a game before the next release ;) !

I think the turns will feel a little faster with a few small interface improvements:

* Jump to last building placed for that faction so you don't have to scrollscrollscrollscrollscrollscroll between each end turn.
* A few organization tweaks to where buildings are placed in the list.
* Possibly hot keys

If you cut to much off the turn count, you won't be able to build up for round 3.  There is still some stuff to be added that will need time for you to build up.

You aren't going to see that much post 1.0.  We are in Alpha (and soon Beta) and right now the pace of corrections and polish are going to be high.  I've got some 21 games started, 1 win, 1 loss.  I don't see this as odd at this point in the games life cycle.

Haha, I had to delete my profile and recreate cause I hated seeing how many unfinished games I had.

I actually need to hurry and get 13 wins up soon.  Those unlockables will need testing too  ::)

Aye, this.

I've found that like with many other strategy titles, particularly the "short turns but lots of them" sorts, the game seems like it's going to take awhile but as you get the hang of it and make turns faster, it ends up not quite being the case.

Not to mention.... definitely doesnt FEEL that long when playing.  Even without the cataclysms in it's pretty fun so far.

This...I think have a snap focus to the other player (either the first town center, or last building, whatever) would be a big improvement...and hopefully not terribly difficult to implement.

My thoughts exactly ;).  Flowers and Well seem to be working (it's hard to see the effect of Flowers, but I saw a marked crime difference between towns with Flowers and Towns without).  I'm not sure I'll try diplomacy--I was never able to keep the diplomats alive before.  I really, really want the Deer Park to allow the Norse to build Longbowmen--two more wins...
My other bonus ship is a TARDIS.
