Worlds of Magic - 4x/strategy game on Kickstarter
« on: April 22, 2013, 03:53:35 am »
Hello Arcen games community,

I can see your tolerant to drunk posts, so I hope you will be also for a little (well intentioned) KS promotion  :D. First to all, and almost needless to say, I'm a member of Wastelands Interactive, the indie developer behind Worlds of Magic. Although my intention is to present you our game in development, I don't want it to be mere spam, so it will be my pleasure to answer your potential questions and bring you details for the development of the game itself, as I think it is an interesting and exciting project for both the developers and players.

That said, Worlds of Magic, a turn based strategy game in meant to be the spiritual successor] to the good old Master of Magic, a 4X classic game by Simtex and Microprose (1994). Work on the project started nearly a year ago in a 2D development environment. As it evolved it was moved to a 3D environment and the basic game mechanics have started to take firm shape.

Here, you can watch a dev video showing the evolution of the battle board (pics below, too):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqojQT8M4Kw

So, what are we trying to achieve with Worlds of Magic? Something with those features:

- Master of Magic Spiritual Successor
- D20 System - Units, Spells and Heroes will all draw from the D20 rule set during the battles.
- 4X deep playability
- Hero Units - Recruit heroes to lead your forces into battle
- Twelve Spell Circles
- Unique Races
- Multiple victory conditions
- A million more things

We started an important Kickstarter campaign in order to earn funds, and allow us to finish a great game, and the approriate successor for one of our favourite games.

We have been updating frequently with a lot of changes that you can read here, and in fact few days ago we added with some art drawn by George Purdy, one of the original Master of Magic designers now working on Worlds of Magic!

We have 10 more days to reach the Kickstarter goal, and hopefully be able to hit some stretch goals too. Hope you like the game. Back us if you like what you see, and spread the word too. Thanks a million for your help, see you in one of the magic planes :D.

Unless I'm missing something the OP does not have a link to the main kickstarter project page. For those who are interested, here it is: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/304725524/worlds-of-magic-a-new-classic-4x-fantasy-game

Hey there, people! How is it going?

Finally we can show progresses on the World Map. Some elements have been added, and of course water has changed a lot since your last visit, lol. Hope you like it.

Well, I am incredibly happy to announce that we have reached our base goal, so the minimum funding for development is now guaranteed! That's BIG THANKS to all of you guys. Now we are trying to hit some stretch goals, and make sure that the game will be released with as much content as possible.

Also, I take the occassion to tell you too that Draconian will be the 5th faction for Worlds of Magic, as the community has decided. Here you can find some art from George Purdy, you know, the creative director and former Master of Magic - Master of Orion designer :).

See you soon,and thanks again!

Unfortunately, I never played the original game, so I don't understand the screenshots or what you are trying to do. I will take another look when you release and somebody does a Let's Play or something.

MoM is a great game, and I still have it on my machine.  Probably my only turn-off here is the d20 system.  Otherwise I'll have to see how magic is done.  I'm really partial to the books from MoM :) .

MoM is my favorite PC game of all time.  Though there's a good bit of nostalgia working for it.

Hey there!

Congratulations on hitting your base goal :)

Thanks a million!  :D

Unfortunately, I never played the original game, so I don't understand the screenshots or what you are trying to do. I will take another look when you release and somebody does a Let's Play or something.

I propose you to paly the original MoM. Is a surprisingly fresh and amazing game even nowadays.

As Heart and Keith points, it's a bit of nostalgia too... but I'd rather play MoM than Civ2 for example, and they both are great games with an important nostalgia load.

Today we can say we surpassed the 35K GBP stretch goal! So the seven faction is a reality too, soon we will ask the community (aka YOU) about what faction will be the next . Also, now it is possible to pledge via PayPal. Of course paypal pledges will count for the new stretch goals!

I picked up Master of Magic and played a game at intro level. I enjoyed it, although I found mid-to-late game really difficult to manage all of my cities and units. Lots of intermediate clicking trying to get limited sized armies onto boats (and figuring out which boat is going to do the job) and moving around to a lot of different islands. Besides the logistical pain in the ass of it all, I had fun! I enjoyed the battles, I like the wizard cut scenes where it shows you summoning things and learning spells, I liked all of the different spells, and the graphics themselves are pretty good considering its 1994.

Overall, great experience, and I will probably keep playing this game at a harder level. I hope that your game improves a lot of the management to get to the fun part, which is all of the magic and conquest, and spend less time on the intermediate clicking that it takes to get there.

In short, you could do a lot to improve the interface, but the game itself is a winning formula. Good luck!

Yea, the interface is the main reason to make another game, imo.  Iirc most strategy games of that era reached an interface critical mass in mid/late game.  Some also hit a processing-time critical-mass for turn processing.

Worlds of Magic is having another Kickstarter Campaign, in order to improve the graphics and meet more stretch goals: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wastelands/worlds-of-magic

If you want to back via paypal, you can do that here: http://forum.wastelands-interactive.com/showthread.php?9958-BUY-Worlds-of-Magic-START-HERE

The game has met it's base goal and first stretch goal already, so those of you who backed the game don't have to worry about the game failing or being delayed to 2015 or anything. Those of you who didn't back can now get a second chance to back the game. I highly recommend backing, as the game looks amazing.

P.S. I am not a developer of the game, and I didn't create my account to promote WoM. I do intend to post on other topics occasionally for stuff like reporting bugs.
